RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Krys Kolanos.
Kolanos scored a point in 13 games with the Flames in 2011-12, filling in for the injury-riddled squad late in the season. It was his first NHL experience since 2008-09, and seeing as the Flames put him on waivers late in 2011-12 – and he went unclaimed – he doesn’t figure much into Calgary’s plans for the upcoming season.
Concussions have been a real threat to Kolanos’ professional career. In fact, the most he ever played in the NHL was 57 games for the Phoenix Coyotes, his rookie season in 2001-02. Kolanos ultimately ended up in the AHL last season with service time for Calgary affiliate the Quad City Flames. There, he impressed with 30 goals and 33 assists in 65 games, catching the attention of Wild personel. Depth at the center position is what he will need to provide for the Wild in 2008-09; certainly he won't be counted on for much else.
It seems like forever since Kolanos was a hot forward prospect. He was beaten out for a final roster spot in Detroit's training camp, which means the entire league will get a shot on him in waivers if they like.
The Coyotes are hoping that Kolanos will start to reach his potential after drafting him in the first round of 2000 (19th overall). He has not been the same since he suffered a concussion in the 2002-03 preseason and missed the regular season.
