Selected 33rd overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Makarov is a quick skater with extensive experience playing in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. The 'Hawks reeled him in with a two-year deal in August and even game him an extended look in training camp and during preseason. Makarov is expected to continue his development with Rockford of the AHL this year, with a concentration on adjusting the American brand of hockey.
The 21-year-old winger is currently battling for one of the last roster spots in training camp. He has been dealing with a sore knee throughout training camp and is a longshot to make the final roster. Markov could become a decent fantasy option, but it won't be for a few years.
Makarov is the son of long-time Russian star Sergei Makarov so his bloodlines are impeccable. He has solid skill, enough to be a offensive player in the NHL, but he needs to bulk up to withstand the rigors of North American play. He's one of the older guys in this year's draft class so there's a chance he might be near the head of the class in terms of readiness.
