Joakim Andersson

Andersson stepped right into the third-line center role last season, picking up eight points in 38 games and providing a solid contribution all year. After leading the Griffins to the Calder Cup following Detroit's playoff exit, he will likely settle into the checking line center position heading into the season.

He's more of a two-way player than most his age, and while the ceiling may not be as high for Andersson compared to the likes of Tomas Tatar and Landon Ferraro, Andersson should fit it in well as a role player in Detroit after some North American seasoning with the Griffins this season.

Andersson worked as a third- and fourth-liner for Frolunda in the Swedish Elite League, chipping in 12 points over 49 games before signing with Grand Rapids (AHL) for their playoff run last season. His greatest experience to date has come centering Sweden's second line at the world junior championships en route to a silver medal. Andersson is a responsible two-way player with a limited offensive ceiling, but his ability to win faceoffs, backcheck and play defense have him on course to be a potential third liner in the NHL down the road. At 20, he's one to file away for the future, but not a player that owners in keeper leagues should bank on at this time.

Andersson is expected to continue his development in Sweden, after being selected by Detroit in the first round of the 2007 draft. Scouts love his faceoff ability and two-game at this stage, but he's just 19 years old and likely three or more years away from making a significant impact in Detroit.

Hmmmmm... Andersson is the kind of guy every team covets. He oozes hockey sense and pure determination, and he has a few skills to go with the character. He'll be one of the best penalty killers in the league but he could also deliver 55 to 60 points, too. And that makes him a decent enough player as the last forward on a fantasy squad. Monitor him.
