For the fourth straight season, Jaffray is once again slated to reprise a role as a top-wing scorer for AHL St. John’s. The 33-year-old led the Ice Caps with 59 points in 2013-14, but his age would seem to be an inhibiting factor in him receiving a sustained opportunity with the Jets. In spite of his excellent numbers in the minors, Jaffray hasn’t appeared in the NHL since the 2011-12 season. He’s strictly organizational depth at this stage in his career and unlikely to receive a call-up unless the Jets endure a rash of injuries at forward.
Formerly a product of the Canucks organization, Jaffray signed with the Flames in 2009 as an unrestricted free agent. In July of 2010, the Flames traded him to the Ducks for winger Logan MacMillan. Jaffray has only 35 games of NHL experience as he has spent more time in the AHL than with the Canucks or the Flames. He has a lot to prove at the NHL level, but he has put up respectable numbers with the Moose notching 95 goals and 138 assists in 273 games. With the lack of NHL experience it is difficult to predict what Jaffray will do if he makes the NHL squad, especially with the depth at the forward position. He'll get a look, but he will have to compete.
Jaffray comes over to the Calgary Flames after spending several years in the Vancouver Canucks' system. At 28 years of age he is transitioning from prospect to journeyman. He still has decent offensive upside, as evidenced by his 49 points (23 G, 26 A) in 56 games with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL last season. Jaffray has a decent shot of sticking with the Flames all season and could provide respectable numbers. Don't jump to add him but keep him on your radar in case he fares better than expected.
At 27, Jaffray is coming close to becoming too old to be labeled a prospect, but he could still develop into a solid NHL player. He appeared in 19 games for the Canucks last season, totaling two goals and four assists. Jaffray will have a chance to make the roster if Mats Sundin shuns Vancouver. The best route would be to take a wait-and-see approach with the aging prospect.
