Nestrasil was enjoying a very good campaign until a fractured vertebra in February cut his season short, although he still finished with a career-high 23 points in 55 games. He started out the season in a bottom-six role before discovering some chemistry with Jordan Staal and Joakim Nordstrom. The trio went on to form a very solid second line, and Nestrasil's ice time spiked as a result – as much as 18-to-20 minutes per night in mid-January. We expect a healthy Nestrasil to be back competing for a similar role when training camps open in September.
The 24-year-old Nestrasil, who signed a two-year, $1.825 million contract with the Hurricanes in July, split his first NHL season with the Red Wings and Hurricanes last year, tallying seven goals and 13 assists across 54 games. After he was claimed off waivers by the Hurricanes in November, Nestrasil ended up leading the team in plus/minus rating, and likely would have posted bigger scoring numbers had he not been felled by an upper-body injury that caused him to miss most of December and January. Now healthy, Nestrasil could have a shot at claiming a second- or third-line role for the 'Canes in 2015-16.
Nestrasil nabbed 16 goals and 20 assists in AHL Grand Rapids in 2013-14, and will likely spend most of 2014-15 there as Detroit has an abundance of centers ahead of him on the depth chart. At 23, one has to wonder when he's going to get a glimpse at significant NHL time.
Nestrasil played half the 2012-13 season in Grand Rapids and will spend another year there honing his skills.
