More of a stay-at-home defenseman than anything else, Lawson was held without a point in 18 appearances with AHL Charlotte in 2010-11. That same year he notched 12 assists in 51 games with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL, but was too often a liability on the ice based on his minus-15 rating in the regular season. Suffice it to say, Lawson is not ready for life in the NHL.

While Lawson isn't regarded as highly as other rearguard prospects such as Jamie McBain, there is still plenty to like about him. As proven by four seasons with Notre Dame in the NCAA, he can score at the blue line and is also proficient when it comes to dishing the puck for assists. He likely will continue to pay his dues in the AHL, for the upcoming season.
