Bollig has decided to retire from hockey, Chris Kuc of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Bollig didn't follow the typical path to the NHL, working his way slowly up the ranks over time. He played parts or all of five seasons at the top level, most notably playing the full season for the club in 2013-14. That season, the enforcer recorded 14 points in addition to his 203 hits and 92 penalty minutes. He finishes his career with 23 points and 392 penalty minutes after spending the final year of his career playing for AHL San Jose and AHL Milwaukee in 2017-18.

Bollig was brought into Calgary for a measure of toughness it was lacking, and for the most part, he delivered. He had two big goals in the playoffs and picked up 126 penalty minutes in the regular and postseason combined. Bollig did have trouble staying in the lineup at times and was a minus-9 for the season, but should continue to be a solid grind-line specialist in 2015-16. Don't expect much offensive production from him, but Calgary considers him a valuable asset.
Bollig is exactly the type of player that team president Brian Burke wanted for Calgary's new look -- a pest that's not afraid to mix it up with opposing players. The Flames see a lot of potential in Bollig, although he was scratched a handful of times in the playoffs as well as suspended for a pair of games last year in Chicago. He will likely take up residency on the fourth line in Calgary. And he could deliver 15-20 points and 100 PIMs there.
Bollig was in and out of the Hawks' lineup last season, but he still led the team in penalty minutes (51). He also added 41 hits in only 25 regular season games. Still, he needs to show more than just hits and PIMs if he wants to increase his minutes.
The 25-year-old enforcer was called up late in the 2011-12 season once John Scott was traded to the Rangers and he showed off his punching prowess -- he collected nine fighting majors and tallied his first NHL goal win a playoff game against Phoenix. He has an outside shot at playing time in Chicago, but he'll be in tough with the likes of Bryan Bickell and a healthy Daniel Carcillo playing tough knuckles on West Madison.
Bollig was assigned to Rockford of the AHL in September. If the Blackhawks need a hard-nosed forward, they might bring him up. Bollig had 115 penalty minutes for Rockford last season in 55 games.
Bollig got his first taste of professional hockey while with Rockford of the AHL with three games played after just signing a contract last April. He had a goal and an assist along with seven penalty minutes for the Icehogs. He is expected to return to Rockford for the start of the 2010-11 season. He is known more for his toughness than his scoring touch. In his sophomore season at St. Lawrence University, Bollig had 83 penalty minutes in 42 games while contributing seven goals and 18 assists.
