Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might sign with Leafs
Bellows, who can play just one more contest on his professional tryout agreement with AHL Toronto before it expires, is in contract negotiations with the Maple Leafs, Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reports Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Bellows has made the most of his time with the Marlies, providing 14 goals and 23 points in 24 AHL games. However, the Maple Leafs already have 47 players under contract with the maximum being 50, and Toronto likely wants to keep some slots free to make maneuvering easier ahead of the March 8 trade deadline. Still, the 25-year-old has demonstrated that he might be an upgrade if deployed in the Maple Leafs' bottom six, so it's entirely plausible Toronto will opt to sign him.

Bellows had three points in eight games for the Islanders last year, as well as 31 points in 52 contests with AHL Bridgeport. In October of 2020, it was revealed Bellows had been disciplined for violating the league's performance enhancing substance policy, and that he had already served his punishment in full. While that shows bad judgement, it doesn't change the fact that Bellows will likely be NHL ready within the next year or so. A physical player, he's a perfect fit for head coach Barry Trotz's blue-collar system, with enough scoring to potentially earn a third-line role. Bellows will have to fend off Michael Dal Colle and Matt Martin for playing time in the near term. If he's unable to do so, the Minnesota native will likely spend another year in the minors.
