Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Los Angeles (NL) – Javy Guerra picked up Sunday's save and could be earning more consideration for the regular role. Matt Guerrier earned the win while pitching in a tie ballgame in the eighth inning.

New York (AL) – Mariano Rivera's job is hardly in jeopardy, but he did struggle some in the ninth inning Saturday against the Cubs. Reed Johnson led off with a solo home run, followed by a single by Alfonso Soriano. Rivera was able to get out of it with a double play and a strikeout.

Oakland – The A's wanted to give Andrew Bailey a day off, so Brian Fuentes pitched the ninth Sunday and notched the save.

St. Louis – Fernando Salas allowed a run in the ninth to blow a save opportunity Sunday. However, he picked up the win thanks to a Skip Schumaker walk-off home run. Salas has earned some leeway, but Sunday's outing makes it two shaky outings in his last three appearances.

Recommended Pickup

Andrew Miller, P, Red Sox – Has Miller finally turned a corner? The can't-miss prospect turned journeyman will make his first start for the Red Sox Monday against the Padres. Miller went 3-3 with a 2.47 ERA while figuring things out in Triple-A this season; but despite not giving up many runs, he did walk an alarming 35 batters in 65.2 innings. However, Miller has really put it together over his last four starts, allowing just five runs in 25.1 innings with 26 strikeouts against only three walks. He had an opt-out clause in his contract that would have kicked in last Wednesday, and other teams were interested in signing Miller, but he stayed with the Red Sox out of loyalty. Clay Buchholz hit the DL Sunday and Miller will fill in for now, but it could be difficult for Miller to find a long-term opportunity. Still, he looks like a good option to stash in keeper leagues.
