Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Kansas City – Joakim Soria blew the save Saturday after giving up four earned runs – including a walk-off three-run home run to Matt LaPorta – in the ninth inning of the Royals' loss to the Indians. Saturday's rough outing ended a stretch in which Soria gave up just one earned run over 22.0 innings. With Soria still in Kansas City, as opposed to somewhere like New York, expect him to remain in the ninth-inning role the rest of the way.

St. Louis – With Eduardo Sanchez now on the 60-day disabled list, and Heath Bell still in San Diego, Fernando Salas' grasp on the closer's role became a bit tighter over the last few days.

Recommended Pickup

Dee Gordon, SS, LAD – Though we recommended Gordon a few weeks ago, he deserves another mention because no prospect was a bigger winner at the trade deadline. Gordon was recalled following the trade of Rafael Furcal to the Cardinals, and he immediately jumped into the starting lineup Sunday. In 82 at-bats earlier this season Gordon hit .229 with three extra-base hits and just four RBI, but at Triple-A he hit .333 with 30 steals in 34 attempts. Gordon projects as a future leadoff hitter who will provide little power but plenty of steals. It may take him some time to become that player, but it may be worth taking a shot in him now in hopes that he can add some speed to your lineup over the season's final few weeks.

Other recent recommendations:Charlie Furbush, Dexter Fowler, Hideki Matsui, Conor Jackson, Javy Guerra
