Closer Watch
Angels
Ernesto Frieri notched an extra-inning save Wednesday, and theres some chatter that the Angels like
Scott Downs in a setup role, with Frieri and
Jordan Walden possibly splitting save chances. There would have been a save opportunity Thursday, but
Dan Haren finished off his 14-strikeout, four-hit shutout in fine fashion.
Reds
Sean Marshall, back in his eighth-inning role, picked up a hold Thursday as
Logan Ondrusek came on for the ninth and worked around a pair of hits to collect his second save.
Aroldis Chapman didnt appear (hed pitched four of the last five days), but a betting man would say the job is still going to be his.
White Sox
Addison Reed gave up a pair of runs in a non-save situation Thursday, but that shouldnt threaten his status as the closer. His ugly-looking ERA and WHIP are the result of just two outings (Thursday and a blowup back on May 13) that are the only games this year in which hes given up runs. Those numbers will come down.
Recommended Pickup
Justin Morneau, 1B, MIN What?
Justin Morneau? Everyone knows about
Justin Morneau! Well, in fact, Morneau is available in half of Yahoo leagues and more than a quarter of ESPN leagues despite the fact that the former MVP has homered four times (including twice on Thursday) in his last seven games. Hes healthy (for now), and perhaps his recent DL stint let him get his swing together after he was all out of whack to start the year. Go get him if hes available in your league he was just cut in one of mine, and you can be sure Ive got a claim in.
