Closer Watch

Baltimore - For the second straight day Thursday, Jim Johnson tossed a perfect frame against Washington to notch a save. He's beginning to show some stability after blowing four of his last five save chances prior to Wednesday, but the fact remains that he's already exceeded his blown save total from a season ago. The right-hander is striking batters out at a better clip this season, but his groundball rate is down from 62.3 percent in 2012 to 48.6 percent this season. If Johnson hits another rough stretch here soon, Darren O'Day could inherit ninth-inning duties.

New York Mets - Bobby Parnell tossed a perfect frame against the Yankees on Thursday for his ninth save of the season. It marked the 12th time in 13th appearances this month that Parnell has not allowed a run, with the lone exception coming last week in Cincinnati. The right-hander has quietly turned in a nice first third of the season, and while the save chances haven't been plentiful, his job as closer is secure.

San Francisco - A clean ninth inning against the A's on Thursday earned Sergio Romo his 14th save of the season and his first since May 16th. He's had a few tough outings this month, but Romo still has a sub-1.00 WHIP and a sub-3.00 ERA. Plus, he continues to show superb command of the strikezone, with just three walks on the season.

Recommended Pickup
Michael Wacha, P, STL - Wacha's big league career got off to a great start Thursday against the Royals. The 21-year-old right-hander was perfect through his first four innings and ended up allowing one run on just two hits while striking out six and not walking a batter over seven innings of work. The 19th overall selection in last year's draft, Wacha flew through the Cardinals' farm system, reaching the majors after just 20 minor-league appearances. It's uncertain how long he'll be up with the big club, but Wacha certainly looked like he belonged Thursday and his performance should earn him a few more starts at the very least.
