Closer Watch

Pirates – Jason Grilli lasted just two-thirds of an inning in the ninth Monday, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk before being lifted for Vin Mazzaro, who got the last out to secure the first save of his career. Not only was he ineffective, he also suffered from discomfort in his forearm, and he'll be re-evaluated Tuesday. Mark Melancon is the odds-on favorite for short-term saves in Pittsburgh.

Rockies – With Rafael Betancourt back on the DL with appendicitis, Rex Brothers reclaimed the closer's role for Colorado and got the save Sunday despite allowing a run. Brothers is the future for the Rox, and appendix-related absences have been known to linger surprisingly long in the past. Considering Betancourt's age, a quick recovery isn't necessarily guaranteed.

Mets - Bobby Parnell ruined a shutout against the Braves Monday by giving up two runs in the ninth. His job is in absolutely no danger unless he gets traded at the deadline, though.

Recommended Pickup
Jonathan Villar, SS, HOU – Let's face it: Shortstop is kind of a wasteland. In almost any given league, close to half the teams are suffering at short, and it only gets worse in leagues with MI spots. Enter the 22-year-old Villar, who's shown elite speed (31 steals in 38 attempts) and surprising pop (eight homers, .444 SLG) for Triple-A Oklahoma. The Astros didn't promote him to platoon him, so he's gonna play pretty much every day and has a chance to make a difference to fantasy rosters lacking production in the middle of the infield.

Other Recent Recommendations: Henry Urrutia, Justin Smoak, Chris Archer, Alex Wood, Jhoulys Chacin
