Closer Watch

Brewers – Jim Henderson struggled toward the end of spring training, seeing his velocity drop, and as a result, Francisco Rodriguez got the call on Opening Day against the Braves and converted in the ninth, allowing one hit while striking out two. Manager Ron Roenicke says K-Rod's his closer – for now. Don't cut Henderson loose, but if he happens to be your only closer in an NL-only league… well, then you're as screwed as I am.

Mets – Bobby Parnell struggled Monday in the Mets' opener, throwing an 85 mph fastball on his first pitch, and though it ticked up into the mid-90s during the outing, he certainly wasn't the Parnell of last season. It seems he's not quite recovered after his offseason neck surgery; meanwhile, Jose Valverde looked awesome in his 1.1 innings, striking out Ryan Zimmerman with the bases loaded in the seventh to preserve a tie game and then pitching a scoreless inning of his own with two more strikeouts. There's no question that Parnell owners should own Valverde for a handcuff right now.

White Sox – For all the Nate Jones hype in the preseason – and for all that Jones is certainly the best pitcher in the South Side bullpen – it was Matt Lindstrom who got the call in the ninth on Opening Day, pitching a scoreless inning with a hit allowed and a strikeout. This is likely to be a committee approach for now – sneaky value for those who drafted Lindstrom.

Recommended Pickup
Oswaldo Arcia, OF, MIN – Don't be thrown off by that .000 batting average after Monday's season opener – Arcia has real fantasy upside despite the 100X-concentrated misery that is the Twins lineup. The sweet-swinging lefty smacked 14 homers in just 97 games last season, and though he only hit .251, Arcia was only 22 years old, and his track record in the minors suggests that he has far higher upside than that. He's a career .314/.376/.540 (that's a .915 OPS!) hitter in the minors who batted .313 for Triple-A Rochester last year and .320 across two levels the year before. He'll have to cut down on the strikeouts, but if he does, he has legitimate upside to hit .300 with 20-25 homers. Yeah, there's probably a spot for that kind of potential in a lot of fantasy lineups. And he's widely available – just 8 percent owned on Yahoo and 3 percent on ESPN.
