Recent Blog Post: NHL Playoff Observations -- Brooms Come Out
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Best save of the night? Zdeno Chara's backhanded snag in the last minute. That stung, but not as much as it would have had the puck found twine.
  • Tuukka Rask, second-best goalie in the world or just lucky? Discuss.
  • Patrick Kane finally showed up Thursday night. He even back checked. Amazing.
  • Kaspars Daugavins, where have you been all my life? That inside-out toe drag got you right into the slot and you almost found twine. I didn't know you had that in you.
  • The Penguins scored twice in four games. The offensively constricted Kings have already scored eight. Just saying.
  • The Bruins joined the NHL in 1924, the Hawks arrived in 1926 and the Original Six era began in 1942-1943. If the Hawks push through, those two teams will face each other in the finals for the first time ever. How did that happen? Oh right -- there were haves and have nots in the Original Six, too.

RotoWire Update
  7/18/2008
With the nucleus of their Eastern Conference championship club in place for the long haul, the Penguins turned their attention to rewarding head coach Michel Therrien. The Penguins and Therrien agreed to terms Friday on a new three-year deal that will keep the former Jack Adams Award finalist under contract through the 2010-11 season. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Penguins did reveal that Therrien will receive a pay raise next season. Therrien, 44, has posted a 108-80-27 record since being hired by the Penguins in December 2005.

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Michel Therrien to a one-year contract extension Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed for the deal, which runs through the 2008-09 season. Therrien, 43, assumed the post in Pittsburgh on December 15, 2005 - less than three months into Crosby's rookie season. He guided the Penguins to a 14-29-8 mark over the final 51 games that season and made headlines at one point for publicly questioning his team's effort. But the young Penguins improved by leaps and bounds under Therrien's guidance last season, going 47-24-11 and earning the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh recorded 105 points, the second-highest total in franchise history, and improve by 47 points in the standings - the fourth-best single-season jump in league history. Therrien benefited greatly from the development of Crosby, who became the youngest player to win the scoring title this past season and won both the Hart Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award.
