Recent Blog Post: NHL Playoff Observations -- Sunday
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Optimus Reim. Reim Minister. I don't care if the nicknames are any good; I just know the goalie is. James Reimer has proved his detractors wrong and even Roberto Luongo has become a fan. Bobby Lou's tweet after the game? #REIM4SOCHI. Now that's funny.
  • Ho hum, Henrik Lundqvist was the difference for the Rangers. Again. The guy was his typical brilliant self. But why isn't anyone talking about Braden Holtby who has allowed one fewer goal in the same six games? Just wondering ...
  • Emerson Etem is a greyhound on ice. Or maybe thoroughbred. Man, can he fly.
  • Jake Gardiner has gone from goat to god on the Leafs' blue line. He's been their best defender; his confidence is through the roof. Remember that come draft day and move him up a few notches on your cheat sheet.
  • I get it that narrowing down the Hart nominees to just three is painfully difficult, but shouldn't my boy Jonathan Toews been there? I could argue a Toews - Jonathan Tavares - Alexander Ovechkin trio for the noms -- Sidney Crosby was great, but his team kept winning without him. And isn't the criteria most valuable to your team?
  • How valuable is Justin Abdelkader in the Wings' system? That shortie sure helped make people forget that stupid elbow and suspension.
  • Can the Caps win if Alexander Ovechkin finishes the series with the two points he has today? Better yet, can they win if Joel Ward remains their top scorer?
  • The monkey really is off Phil Kessel's back -- he was great. Send the primate to the same place that took Darwin the shearling-coated Ikea monkey. Yes, Toronto has its share of crazy stories.

The Canucks on Thursday announced that Scott Mellanby has been added to the club’s pro scouting department. Mellanby, 41, joined the Canucks organization as a consultant to the general manager this past May after retiring as a player following the 2006-07 season. In 20 years, Mellanby played in 1,431 games and recorded 364 points and 476 assists with the Philadelphia Flyers, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Thrashers.

The Canucks renewed their affiliation agreement with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL on Thursday. Established in 2004 after relocating from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Salmon Kings became an affiliate of the Canucks on July 18, 2006. Victoria, which plays in the West Division of the ECHL’s National Conference, were one of the nine expansion teams to join the league in 2004-05. Last season, Victoria claimed the West Division title with a 42-23-4-3 record and defeated the Bakersfield Condors on the conference quarterfinals of the Kelly Cup playoffs before losing to the Utah Grizzlies in five games in the conference semifinals.
