The Punk
Falls for the first time in Bellator

Thomson lost to Patricky Freire via TKO (punches) at 0:40 of Round 2 at Bellator 172 on Saturday in San Jose, Calif.
ANALYSIS
Thomson tried to move and stick to the outside. Unfortunately whenever he entered range, he ate big shots from Freire. Late in the first round, the Brazilian dropped him. Thomson recovered and returned to his strategy. Early in the second round, Thomson appeared to catch a headbutt that was the beginning of the end. He shot for a takedown and ran right into an uppercut. He was out, and the referee was forced to stop the bout. Thomson had won his first two bouts in Bellator and this stopped his momentum.

Booked for return at Bellator 172

Thomson (undisclosed) will take on Patricky Freire in a lightweight matchup at Bellator 172 on Feb. 18, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomson left the UFC after three straight losses, but the 38-year-old rebounded with back-to-back victories in his first two fights under the Bellator banner. He didn't fight at all in 2016 due to injury, but Pitbull -- who fought for a title his last time out -- will likely be the toughest opponent he's faced since switching promotions.

Thomson defeated Pablo Villaseca via TKO (Punches) at 3:59 of Round 2 at Bellator 147 on Friday in San Jose, California.
ANALYSIS
Entering Friday's fight as a -1375 favorite, Thomson swarmed his inexperienced (compared to Thomson, at least) opponent. Repeatedly bludgeoning Villaseca with strikes within his guard, Thomson secured his second finish within the past three months. With an ally in Bellator CEO Scott Coker, it's easy to envision Thomson ascending Bellator's lightweight division after Friday's showcase performance; but a win over the 10-2 Villaseca otherwise means very little. If Thomson receives a fight with Michael Chandler, as he requested in the post-fight interview, it would prove to be a greater test than his bout at Bellator 147.

Thomson made his Bellator debut in impressive fashion, submitting Mike Bronzoulis (Arm-Triangle Choke, 0:39 of Round 3) at Bellator 142 on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Thomson was on his game Saturday, using a smothering wrestling attack to win rounds one and two before clasping on a slick arm-triangle in round three for the finish. Thomson's win didn't come against a big name, but the former Strikeforce champion has the pedigree and skill set to make an impressive run in Bellator.

Thomson will make his promotional debut as a -1250 favorite against Mike Bronzoulis at Bellator 142 on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
"The Punk" will make his Bellator debut as a heavy favorite, and with good reason; three of his last five opponents have challenged for UFC titles. Thomson will be taking on Bronzoulis after a short turnaround, having lost a decision to Tony Ferguson at UFC 171 in July. While his best days may be behind him, the former Strikeforce champion is tough as nails and can serve as a formidable gatekeeper in Bellator's lightweight division for the foreseeable future.
