| Chien-Ming Wang (P) NY-A |
|
Wang will be placed on the 15-day DL because of a strained shoulder with bursitis, the Westchester Journal-News reports. |
| Early estimates suggest that he'll be out for approximately one month. Wang had one more turn in the rotation scheduled before the All-Star break, while it's believed that Sergio Mitre will get that opportunity before Phil Hughes or Alfredo Aceves takes over after the break. |
| Aaron Cook (P) COL |
|
Cook left his start in the top of the sixth Saturday with apparent tightness in his back. He allowed three runs (two earned) in five-plus innings of work. |
| Cook tweaked something, likely his back, as he dove to field an infield grounder in the sixth. He wasn't right for most of the night, consistently leaving his sinker up in the zone and giving up more than his share of fly balls and line drives. We'll see what the club says after the game. |
| Orlando Cabrera (SS) OAK |
|
Cabrera went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's loss to Cleveland. |
| A 14-game hitting streak at the end of June paired with a nice performance on Saturday has lifted Cabrera's average back to .252. His defense isn't what it used to be, but the A's may be able to flip him for someone of more long-term value at the trade deadline later this month. |
| Carl Pavano (P) CLE |
|
Pavano scattered eight hits over 6.2 innings while holding Oakland to two runs for his seventh win of the season on Saturday. |
| Put simply, Pavano has been too hittable at times, but he's flashed signs of turning his career around in his first year with Cleveland. Pavano has a 71:20 K:BB ratio in 99 innings this season, so there's certainly reason to optimistic about the chances of improvement during the second half of the season. |
| Vincent Mazzaro (P) OAK |
|
Mazzaro gave up five runs on 10 hits over six innings in Saturday's loss to Cleveland. |
| It was his first very poor outing after an impressive six-start stretch to begin his big league career. The biggest issue for Mazzaro has been run support, as he's shown very good command (13 walks in 42.2 innings) for a 22-year-old rookie. Once the hitting catches up to the talented young pitching staff in Oakland, the A's will become threats again in the American League West. |
