De Jong surprisingly started the Netherlands' World Cup semifinal match against Argentina on Wednesday, but he lasted only 62 minutes before he had to be subbed off.

De Jong was clearly not in top fitness for the match, and his substitution was Louis van Gaal's second of the match, one which ended up going into extra time. It is possible that he could play in the third-place game against Brazil, although it's unclear if he suffered a setback in the match that could delay his season debut with AC Milan.

De Jong suffered a tear in his groin during the Netherlands' Round of 16 win over Costa Rica on Monday, and he will be sidelined for two-to-four weeks, the Associated Press reports.

De Jong came off after just nine minutes Monday and it appears very unlikely that he will play again in the World Cup, even if the Dutch advance to the final. Depending on his quickly he can recover, it wouldn't be surprising if he started off his Serie A season with AC Milan a bit slower than usual.
