Van Ginkel will spend the 2015/16 season on loan at Stoke City, Chelsea announced Friday.

Van Ginkel spent last season with AC Milan, scoring one goal and picking up one assist in 17 appearances, mostly as a defensive midfielder. He wasn't close to solidifying a regular rotation spot at Stamford Bridge, and he'll get the opportunity of first-team football at Stoke, similar to Victor Moses last season.

Van Ginkel (knee) appeared in an U-21 game Friday, his first appearance since suffering a torn ACL back in September, reports.

Manager Jose Mourinho said in January that van Ginkel may be able to play for the U-21 side by the end of March or beginning of April, so he appears to be a little ahead of schedule. It's unclear how long he'll need on the lower levels to get back to full fitness, which means he could still miss the rest of the current Premier League season.

Manager Jose Mourinho said Tuesday that van Ginkel (knee) may be able to play for Chelsea's U-21 side by the end of March or beginning of April.

Van Ginkel has been out since undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn ACL at the end of September. It was initially believed that the midfielder would miss the entire season, although a return late in March to the U-21 side doesn't necessarily mean he'll see late-season Premier League action.
