Donovan, who intimated recently that he'd like to go on loan to Everton during the January transfer window, will be staying Stateside instead, ESPN FC reports. LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said that his players "aren't going anywhere. They had a full 11 months of playing and they need some time off."

U.S. national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann said he wanted his players who could go on loan to Europe to do just that to keep their fitness up ahead of the MLS season and next summer's World Cup. Donovan has already made two short loan moves to Everton in the past few years and said he'd love to go back. Unfortunately for him, it's not in the cards this time around.

Donovan has been named to the United States' roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which is being played in July, the Associated Press reports.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has bypassed Donovan for recent World Cup qualifiers but he clearly believes the midfielder is now fit for national duty. Donovan has already played in three World Cups and is hoping to remain on the roster for more qualifying to take place in September.

Donovan assisted on Marcelo Sarvas' goal in the 27th minute and then scored his own in the 74th minute during Saturday's 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City.

The goal and assist were Donovan's first MLS points since returning from his sabbatical. He returned to the Galaxy in excellent shape and has made it very clear that he's trying to work his way back onto the U.S. national team.

Donovan has returned to training with the Galaxy, although he has already ruled himself out for Saturday's match against Toronto, the San Jose Mercury News reports. However, he could be made available as a substitute in subsequent matches.

Donovan took a sabbatical after helping the Galaxy to the MLS Cup last season and he has failed to play for the U.S. National Team ever since. He noted that he'd like to get fit enough to rejoin the team, which could use his help in the midst of World Cup qualifying.

Donovan will extend his "sabbatical" until the end of March, the LA Times reports.

Thus, Donovan will miss two more big World Cup qualifying games for the U.S. against Costa Rica and Mexico.

Donovan is on a hiatus of sorts, taking a break from soccer. The U.S. squad might replace Donovan with Graham Zusi.
