Cherundolo announced his retirement from football Wednesday, citing persistent knee problems, ESPN FC reports.

Cherundolo will remain with Hannover as an assistant coach with the U-23 team. Cherundolo, who has 87 caps for the U.S. men's national team, has had multiple knee surgeries over the last two years, and simply could not continue playing as a result. He has played in three World Cups, and has spent his entire professional career playing for Hannover, the longest run for any American in the Bundesliga.

Cherundolo (knee) will return to training with the ball for Hannover after undergoing his third knee injury of year in August, ESPN FC reports.

Cherundolo stated that he's going to take as much time as he needs to recover, which likely means he'll miss a majority of this season. He was last seen on the pitch back on May 18 against Dusseldorf and as of right now, there is no exact timetable for his return.

Hannover 96 says Cherundolo will be out for about four weeks with a left ankle injury, the Associated Press reports.

The U.S. captain's weekend was a bad one, as his team blew a 2-0 lead in a 4-2 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup final Saturday, and he ended up hurting himself in the process. However, Hannover 96's season doesn't start until August 5, so there's time for Cherundolo to heal up and not miss any Bundesliga action.

Cherundolo put together another great performance for the United States despite their 2-1 loss to Ghana in the World Cup on Sayurday.

Cherundolo entered the off-season in search of a contract after his deal with German club Hannover 96 expired. His performance for the U.S in the run up to the World Cup and in the tournament earned him a 2-year extension with Hannover.

Cherundolo (hip) has not trained in four weeks for his German club side, Hanover 96, and has been ruled out for the USA's World Cup Qualifier against Mexico next week reports Yanks Abroad.

It's a fairly significant loss, as the Mexico matches tend to get chippy, and Cherundolo will take on all comers. This could be a huge opportunity for one of the young outside American defenders to step in and shine.
