Long had two goals and two assists in Southampton's 6-1 rout of Aston Villa on Saturday.

Long's tremendous game was actually overshadowed by Sadio Mane, who scored the fastest hat trick in Premier League history. Long's scores were his first since March 21 against Burnley, and while he plays forward enough to be involved, he's still a relatively limited fantasy option next to Mane and Graziano Pelle, who also scored Saturday.

Long came on in the 62nd minute and set up a Graziano Pelle goal three minutes later during Southampton's 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday.

Like many of his fellow Saints attackers, the Irishman has been in and out of the lineup recently, but has played well and been somewhat productive whenever he's gotten the chance. Long, who now has three goals and three assists on the season, will hope to have regained a starting place next weekend against Sunderland.

Long took two shots and scored in the 37th minute during his man of the match performance versus Burnley on Saturday.

Long has earned more playing time recently, this was his second straight start, and performances like this one can only help his case. If he sticks in the starting lineup, the Irishman could be a nice offensive contributor down the stretch for the Saints. Southampton will next take on Everton in a fortnight.

Long came off the bench to score his first two Southampton goals in a 2-0 win against Leicester on Saturday.

The Irish striker came off the bench for the last 22 minutes and scored his first two Premier League goals for the Saints. Long has been competing for a starting position with Sadio Mane and these goals are likely to edge him towards a starting position against Aston Villa after the international break.

Long made his Southampton debut after being introduced as a 74th minute substitute in Sunday's 2-1 loss at Liverpool.

Long completed a generous 12 million move to Southampton just last week, so he was always going to be hard-pressed to start Sunday at Anfield. Fellow Saints new-boy Graziano Pelle began the match up front and was joined by Long in the game's closing stages. Moving forward, it will be interesting to see if new Southampton boss Ronald Koeman deploys a two striker formation, especially since upcoming fixtures versus West Brom, West Ham, and Newcastle seem favorable from an attacking standpoint.

Long is available off the bench for Southampton's Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday.

Long transferred from Hull City just last Thursday, so it's not a great surprise that manager Ronald Koeman is keeping him on the bench to start less than a week later. Graziano Pelle will get the start up front.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said Friday that he will decide after Saturday's training session whether Long will start Sunday against Liverpool.

Long was acquired from Hull City just this week, but he trained throughout the preseason, so it is more of a tactical decision than anything else. Once he starts, Long will spearhead the revamped Southampton attack until Jay Rodriguez returns from a torn ACL.

Long has officially signed with Southampton after transferring from Hull City.

Long, who signed a four-year contract with the Saints, didn't last long with Hull City, playing only half of a season under Steve Bruce. He scored seven goals in 30 split appearances for West Brom and Hull City during the 2013-14 season. Long is a nice addition to a Southampton squad that has been looking to bolster its attacking options after losing Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dani Osvaldo, with Jay Rodriguez still recovering from an injury as well.
