Pizarro continues to recover from a muscle injury and will likely miss the season opener against Bayern Munich this Friday.

Pizarro was one of the Bundesliga's top scorers last season and played a major role in Werder Bremen's relegation survival, so manager Viktor Skripnik will hope to have the striker back to full fitness after the international break, especially with fellow forward Max Kruse sidelined for the foreseeable future with a knee injury.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Pizarro scored 16 goals and added three assists in 32 appearances in all competitions this season.

Pizarro actually started just 17 Bundesliga matches, but he still managed to finish tied for sixth in the division in scoring. He has a year left on his current contract, and would likely earn an extension offer next season if he is able to duplicate his form from 2015/16.

Pizarro scored a goal from the penalty spot in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Wolfsburg.

Pizarro, who has been sidelined with a back injury since the March international break, returned to the pitch for Werder Bremen on Saturday and found the back of the net once again. The goal is Pizarro’s 13th on the season, and he now has an astounding seven goals in his last five matches. Pizarro is a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for 16th place Werder Bremen, who currently sit in the relegation zone with four matches to go. Luckily for fantasy owners, Pizarro continues to perform at a high level. Werder Bremen has a busy schedule, facing Bayern Munich away in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday before traveling to Hamburger SV for the early match this Friday.

Pizarro, who suffered a back injury during Peru’s 1-0 international friendly defeat to Uruguay on Wednesday and had to be substituted out in the 49th minute, will not be available for Saturday’s match at Borussia Dortmund, the club reports.

Werder Bremen will have to play away at second place Borussia Dortmund without their most potent goal scoring weapon. Pizarro’s return date has not yet been set, although manager Viktor Skripnik is hopeful that the forward will be able to return to full training next week. Zlatko Junuzovic is likely to play in his place. Pizarro has been a terrific option for fantasy owners this year, having tallied 12 goals and two assists in 23 Bundesliga matches.

Pizarro scored a goal from the penalty spot in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home against Mainz 05.

With five goals and one assist in his last three Bundesliga matches, Pizarro’s productivity on the pitch is matched by few other players. His 12 Bundesliga goals put him in the top 10 goal scorers in the entire league. Werder Bremen are fighting off relegation and have a tough matchup in a few weeks after the international break, when they travel to Signal Iduna Park to face second place Borussia Dortmund.

Pizarro finished training early Thursday and will miss Saturday’s away game at Bayern Munich due to a pulled adductor muscle, according to manager Viktor Skripnik.

Pizarro’s absence could not have come at a worse time. Werder Bremen have struggled this season but have been in excellent form recently and are heading into a tough stretch, facing Bayern Munich, Mainz 05, and Borussia Dortmund in their next three fixtures. Pizarro has been on fire recently, bagging 11 goals and an assist in his last 10 matches in all competitions.

Pizarro is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks after rupturing muscles in his right thigh during training Thursday

Pizarro hasn't been a heavily used player this season, making only two appearances thus far. He scored once against Schalke back on September 21 and he'll now be out until December before he can try to earn some more first-team action.
