Ways To Bet On Baseball
Plenty of people may be interested in betting on baseball, but they might not be quite sure how to do it. Baseball betting is a little trickier than football or basketball betting, because baseball works with an untimed run scoring system rather than a timed point system. However, there are some established and fairly simple ways to bet on America's pastime. If your prior gambling experiences only consist of playing poker on Mac computers, you will probably be in for a treat as betting on baseball can be very fun and add a lot of excitement to any regular league game.
The Baseball Money Line Bet
A money line bet is just a fancy way of structuring an odds bet. If you were betting on a horse race, you might see that horse A is going off at 4-to-1, horse B at 3-to-1, etc. If you pick horse B and that horse wins, you get 3-to-1 on your money. In baseball, it is rare that a team is a 3-to-1 or more favorite over any other team, and odds are expressed instead in the form of a money line (example: Dodgers -220/Giants +140). What this means is that if you want to win $100 betting on the Dodgers, you need to risk $220. If you want to bet on the Giants, you can bet $100 to win $140. In traditional odds terms, this means that if you bet on the Dodgers you are giving the bookies 2.2-to-1 odds, and if you bet on the Giants you are getting 1.4-to-1 odds.
The Baseball Run Line Bet
In baseball, a team may need a little more help to get betting interests on its side, and this is where the run line comes in. It is sort of a combination of the money line and a point spread. The way it works is by offering run support along with the money odds. For example, you want to bet on the Giants, but you're not confident they can win the game. The run line for the game might look like this; Dodgers -1.5 -120/Giants +1.5 -110. Now, you will have to put up $110 to win $100 on the Giants, however, the Giants can lose by a run and you will still win the bet. On the other side, you can now get a $100 bet on the Dodgers by risking only $120, but you will have to give up a run and a half, so the Dodgers will need to win by at least two runs for you to collect.
