Wheeler was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Wheeler once held some promise as a prospect while coming up through the Diamondbacks' system, but it appears his promising numbers in the minors were merely a creation of the Pacific Coast League. He's never experienced much success during his time in the big leagues, producing a .233/.280/.335 line in 225 career plate appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
In his first season with the Rockies organization, Wheeler continued to shine at the minor-league level, amassing an excellent .306/.351/.463 batting line for Triple-A Colorado Springs. However, when his stellar play earned him at-bats with the parent club, Wheeler failed to take advantage, cobbling together a .238 on-base percentage in 42 plate appearances. Young players struggling in their early exposure to the majors is not a new phenomenon, but it’s worth wondering whether Wheeler will ever make the leap after he struggled in a similar fashion in his trial with the Diamondbacks the season before. Perhaps Wheeler’s transition could be aided by more consistent at-bats in the majors rather than just the occasional start or pinch-hitting chance, but he won’t be granted that opportunity anytime soon with Nolan Arenado entrenched at the hot corner.
Wheeler saw some time as the D-Backs' regular third baseman, but eventually lost the job after Chris Johnson was acquired from the Astros. Wheeler yielded a marginal .239/.294/.339 line in 50 games with Arizona, but was putting together an excellent year at Triple-A Reno prior to his callup, batting an incredible .351 with 15 home runs and 90 RBI in only 362 at-bats. He would seem to have more power upside than incumbent third baseman Jordan Pacheco, so if Wheeler proves he can get on base with greater consistency at the major league level, he could emerge as a stopgap at third base until Nolan Arenado is ready to take over the starting job.
