Buckel was named an organizational pitching coach for the Mariners on Wednesday, effectively ending his playing career, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The former top-prospect is hanging up his cleats after eight seasons in the minors, though he's sticking around the game as a coach. As skilled as Buckel was, the 25-year-old saw his career derailed by control issues, issuing 234 free passes in 393 career innings while failing to make it past Double-A. He last played for the Angels in 2017, compiling a 4.79 ERA and 13:21 K:BB across 20.2 innings with Double-A Mobile.

Minor League Barometer: Promotion Time for Prospects
July 17, 2014
Corey Seager is among a number of prospects who have earned recent promotions as he'll head to Double-A for the Dodgers.
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
Buckel's control completely left him in 2013, as he walked 28 batters in 9.1 innings at Double-A Frisco to begin the year, before returning to lower competition in some complex games - where he walked seven in 1.1 innings. He entered the year as one of the more surprising pitching prospects around, particularly given his age, and he finished the year as one of the bigger disappointments. His career could go any number of directions at this point, but it's safe to say that he doesn't project as a back-end starter like he did a year ago.
Buckel earned a promotion to Double-A Frisco after a nice start to the year at High-A Myrtle Beach. He struggled in his first few starts at Double-A, but his season-ending numbers were decent. He doesn't throw hard, and doesn't project as a top-of-the-rotation starter as a result, but there's some thought that he could develop into a nice No. 4 starter if he's able to retain his control as he faces advanced hitters.
