Zach Walters

The Indians had hoped to give Walters a serious look at a utility role in the spring but an oblique injury early on shelved those thoughts and landed him on the DL to start the season. He was sent to Triple-A Columbus after getting back to full health and spent the summer between Columbus and Cleveland but never saw much playing time with the Tribe. A late-season shoulder injury turned out to be a torn labrum that required surgery and a six-month recovery period that threatens his readiness for the start of spring training. Walters has flashed power in his stints with the Nationals and Indians, hitting 10 homers in 176 plate appearances in 2014, but his inability to make contact is easily exploited. A 35.8% strikeout rate is tough to sustain when coupled with a 5.7% walk rate and he'll face an uphill battle to win a bench spot this spring even with the allure of his power potential.
