The Orioles released Baumann on Wednesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 34-year-old southpaw linked up with the Orioles on a minor-league deal March 7, but after he served up three earned runs over 1.1 innings across three Grapefruit League appearances, the organization elected to part ways with him. Baumann, who last appeared in the majors in 2018, previously announced his retirement in 2019 before reviving his career after a two-year hiatus. Now a free agent again, Baumann will have to settle for a minor-league deal with another organization if he wants to keep playing.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
Baumann has nine seasons of minor-league experience under his belt, including 251 innings of work at the Triple-A level over parts of five seasons within the Kansas City and San Diego systems. He has a 3.02 ERA while in Triple-A, which is impressive given all of that time has been in the Pacific Coast League. In that time, he has averaged a strikeout per inning and has had a home run rate of 0.7 per nine innings. All of that work has garnered the lefty just under 28 innings of work at the major-league level over the course of the past two seasons where he has had similar success as one of the LOOGYs on the roster. He will look to fill that role for the course of a full season in 2018 at the big-league level.
Baumann made his big league debut in mid-July after being sidelined by a back injury, and he shuttled between El Paso and San Diego throughout the second half. Pitching exclusively in a relief role, Baumann maintained a strikeout-per-inning K/9 at both levels last season, working predominantly with a fastball-slider combination while mixing in the occasional changeup. Without overpowering stuff (88.6 mph fastball), Baumann may have a difficult time holding more than a low-leverage role in the San Diego bullpen, but he likely did enough in 11 appearances with the Padres to enter spring training with a chance to secure an Opening Day roster spot. In order to stick, however, he will need to cut back on the free passes after issuing walks at a 10 percent clip between Triple-A and the big leagues in 2016.
