Halsey didn't pitch beyond mid-April, eventually deciding to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in early July. He's been removed from the A's 40-man roster, and it's expected he'll spend the early part of 2008 recovering.
Halsey was sent to the A's just before the season started and spent the year in a swing role. His control wavered, issuing 46 walks in 94.1 innings, and he figures to get a look at a rotation spot only if Joe Kennedy spits the bit in spring training.
Halsey pitched well at times as Arizona's fifth starter in his first full year in the bigs, but he wore down noticeably in August and was shut down for the year in early September. Halsey was working on a curveball in his side sessions toward the end of last season. If he shows in the spring that the curve is a good third pitch to support his fastball and slider, he could make some noticeable gains this season.
Halsey made three good starts out of seven with the Yankees in 2004. Traded to Arizona in the Randy Johnson deal, he could compete for the fifth starter role this spring. He's a good pick for a reserve or minor league roster.
