After his steady rise through the Arizona system, Gonzalez hit the wall in the majors in 2006, and had a miserable 2007 at Triple-A before getting claimed on waivers by the Nationals. He's got a similar four-pitch assortment to Jason Bergmann, albeit with a better fastball, and if the organization can refine his delivery he could prove to be the latest surprise contributor to the Washington rotation.
Gonzalez was signed at 16 out of Venezuela, and has climbed very slowly through the system. He is more about command than power, and he's done a good job of keeping the ball in the park. This E. Gonzalez is the better than teammate Edgar Gonzalez, and the one more likely to provide value in 2007.
Gonzalez was Arizona's minor league pitcher of the year in 2004 and he continued to progress last season. He'll likely start 2006 at Triple-A and could get a shot at the bigs. With a nice strikeout rate and low WHIP, the kid's got a chance.
Yes, there'll be two jerseys that read "E. Gonzalez" on the back when the Diamondbacks come to spring training, and they're both pitchers. Enrique is the one you haven't heard of yet, but he was the chain's minor league pitcher of the year in 2004. He'll start this season at Double-A, and is likely still a year way from the bigs.
