2024 Fantasy Outlook
Freeman was already great but got better because he jumped in on the steals fun last year. Freeman's other numbers were as amazing as they always were as he continues to produce at a Hall of Fame pace but added cherry on top by steals as many bases in 2023 as he did over the three previous seasons combined. Freeman's 23 steals was a great reminder that sprint speed is not everything for steals as Freeman's sprint speed was in the bottom third of the league. We raise that point because that is about the only risk in this area is that he is slowing down and the steals will continue eventually fade as Freeman continues to progress into his mid 30's. There is no doubt Freeman is a first round pick; the only doubt is how high he is taken in the first round . He outearned everyone not named Acuna Jr or Olson and sits very high on our 2024 projections and when you throw in the fact Freeman has avoided the IL since 2017, he is the epitome of a safe first round foundation. Stays in two hole after Ohtani signing
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed at the team's Fan Fest event Feb. 3 that Freeman will remain the team's No. 2 hitter in 2023 even after the offseason signing of Shohei Ohtani (elbow), Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ohtani batted out of the two hole in 71 of his 135 starts with the Angels in 2023, but Roberts said that the reigning American League MVP will slot in as the No. 3 hitter to begin his tenure with the Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Dodgers will maintain continuity atop the order with Mookie Betts in the leadoff spot and with Freeman as the No. 2 hitter, after the latter made all 161 of his starts out of that lineup spot in 2023 en route to producing a .977 OPS and scoring a career-high 131 runs. Assuming Ohtani doesn't experience any major delays in his recovery from last September's internal brace procedure and is ready to serve as a full-time designated hitter early in the season, Freeman could have a chance to improve upon his already immense counting stats from 2023. Catcher Will Smith was a solid performer as the Dodgers' primary No. 3 hitter a season ago, but Ohtani's OPS in 2023 was still 269 points greater than Smith's.

With a 157 wRC+, Freeman was at least 50 percent better than average for the fifth time in his career. His homers fell, but a personal best 47 doubles helped mitigate the drop. One home run estimator indicated three of his 22 dingers were undeserved while another pegged him for four more. The underlying metrics show no difference from previous seasons, so perhaps the drop was moving to the NL West, though on paper it shouldn't have made a difference. Freeman swiped 13 bases, his most ever. Freeman only missed three games, bringing the count to just 10 absences since playing only 117 games in 2017. Excluding 2020, Freeman has collected at least 192 runs plus RBI over this span, exceeding 200 for the last three full campaigns. Freeman may not match the homers and steals of other elite hitters, but he makes up for it in the other three roto categories, and with a 12 percent walk rate, he's an OBP and points league monster.
