Closer Watch
Washington - Rafael Soriano gave up a run on two hits in the ninth inning of Thursday's game against the Rockies, but he managed to escape with his 17th save of the season. He struck out two batters, bringing his K:BB ratio in his last six appearances to 8:1. The run allowed by Soriano was the right-hander's first since May 21, and he's now tied with Aroldis Chapman for fourth in the National League in saves.
St. Louis - Despite giving up two hits, including a solo homer by Marlon Byrd, in the ninth inning of Thursday's game, Edward Mujica was able to close the door on a 2-1 victory over the Mets. Amazingly, the 29-year-old right-hander is now a perfect 19-for-19 in save chances since taking over as closer for the Cardinals. He's sporting a 1.82 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP over 29.2 innings, so it's probably safe to say Mujica has been one of the best in-season pickup options thus far in 2013.

Tyler Colvin, OF, COL - The Rockies had a tough day Thursday, to say the least. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki suffered a broken rib and is likely headed for the disabled list, while outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler both left with injuries of their own. Gonzalez and Fowler reportedly only suffered bruises, but Colvin is now the only healthy outfielder on the roster aside from Michael Cuddyer, who just returned Thursday from a rib ailment that cost him five games. Colvin's off to pretty good start since his call-up last week (4-for-15 with two homers and seven RBI), and he was slashing .293/.396/.518 at Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to his promotion. Plus, the club showed confidence in Colvin by designating Eric Young Jr. for assignment earlier this week, so even when Gonzalez and Fowler are ready to go, Colvin should continue to see playing time for Colorado.
