DraftKings MLB: Monday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Stephen Strasburg, WAS at LAD ($13,200): It may be madness to try to squeeze a win past Clayton Kershaw, but the Dodgers remain a bottom-10 team against right-handed pitching and have the seventh-lowest fly ball rate in the league. By contrast, the Nationals hold a .347 wOBA against lefties, good for fifth-best this season.

Doug Fister, HOU vs. LAA ($7,800): Fister has been on a remarkable run since getting blasted in the opening month of the season, having notched a 2.35 ERA over 57.1 innings in May and June. The Angels could have trouble against an extreme ground ball pitcher like Fister, as they hit the ball in the air less than 33 percent of the time.

CATCHER

Willson Contreras, CHC vs. STL ($2,000): Contreras has yet to log time behind the plate since being promoted to the big club, but he is expected to dawn the gear for the first time against lefty Jaime Garcia on Monday. The 24-year-old, who slashed .353/.442/.593 with nine home runs at Triple-A Iowa, homered on the first pitch he saw during a pinch-hit appearance Sunday against the Pirates.

FIRST BASE

David Ortiz, BOS vs. CWS ($5,500): It will be tough to fit many Red Sox into a lineup that includes a top pitcher, but it's a good idea to try to sneak at least one lefty in against Miguel Gonzalez, as he holds an xFIP of 5.54 and a 1.8 HR/9 rate against southpaws. Ortiz has notched an otherworldly .408 ISO in 184 at-bats versus righties this year.

SECOND BASE

Jonathan Schoop, BAL at TEX ($3,400):Derek Holland will be a perennial stack candidate until he displays some ability to stop the bleeding, as he comes in with an xFIP of 5.80 against his opposite hand and hasn't tallied a ERA under 6.00 since posting a 2.48 over 29 innings in April. Schoop has fared better against righties this season, but he will try to match Holland's fly ball profile with his 47 percent ground ball rate.

THIRD BASE

Chris Johnson, MIA vs. COL ($2,700): Opposing starter Jorge De La Rosa's shaky results got him banished to the bullpen earlier this month, but he came out strong in a return start against the Yankees, tossing five scoreless innings. Despite the promising outing, he has still allowed a .549 slugging percentage against right-handed batters over 25.2 innings.

SHORTSTOP

Javier Baez, CHC vs. STL ($3,800): Baez is worthy of attention whenever he is facing a left-handed pitcher, as he is slashing .350/.422/.575 with two homers through 40 at-bats against southpaws this season. Garcia becomes a very average pitcher when facing righties, as his strikeout rate drops to just 18 percent while his walk rate rises to 10 percent.

OUTFIELD

Carlos Gonzalez, COL at MIA ($3,800):Paul Clemens doesn't seem like someone who is ready for prime time, as he has a career 5.51 ERA over 98 major league innings. He hasn't faired much better at Triple-A New Orleans this season, notching a 4.30 ERA with just 66 strikeouts over 75.1 frames. Gonzalez is having a typically fantastic year, as evidenced by his .314/.359/.557 slash line over 255 at-bats.

Colby Rasmus, HOU vs. LAA ($3,900):Jhoulys Chacin's level drops considerably when facing lefties, as he strikes out less than 13 percent of the southpaws he faces, leading to a 4.72 xFIP. Rasmus has slowed a bit after a strong April, but he still has a .175 ISO against right-handed pitchers.

Seth Smith, SEA at DET ($3,900):Mike Pelfrey is another pitcher who should be in our sights every fifth day, as he holds an xFIP over 5.00 from both sides of the platoon. Meanwhile, Smith has a .356 wOBA and a 35 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitchers this season.

Other options: Joey Rickard, BAL at TEX ($3,700); Giancarlo Stanton, MIA vs. COL ($4,000); Albert Almora Jr., CHC vs. STL ($3,400)
