NL FAAB Factor: Waiver Pickups of the Week

1. Identify likely free agents and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.
2. Estimate how much of your free-agent budget you should bid on them.

This year, we're incorporating grids into the FAAB articles, so users can easily see at a glance how certain players stack up against others and how much they should command in a variety of formats.

The grids, which are sortable by column (click on the header), include a very basic "player grade" column. This serves as a reflection of a player's skills and role on an A-E scale. Carlos Correa would have been an "A" grade player last year -- that mark will be reserved for similar high-impact prospects stepping into an everyday role.

As always, if there is a player that was not discussed in the article that you would like to know about, feel free to ask about the player in the comments.

Zach Eflin, Phillies – Eflin had a debut to forget June 14, allowing nine runs in 2.2 innings. Since then, in his last four starts, Eflin has a 2.03 ERA and 13:1 K:BB in 26.2 IP. Eflin is an extreme groundball pitcher who has benefitted from a low-BABIP, so tread lightly as he has a 4.80 FIP, but he does have the stuff – mid-90s two-seam fastball, good slider and improving changeup – to where he projects to miss bats. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL - $14

Tyler Glasnow, Pirates – Glasnow, profiled earlier this season, started Thursday for Pittsburgh after four straight excellent starts at Triple-A Indianapolis. With Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon likely back after the All-Star break, it's unclear if Glasnow will stick in the rotation, but he had a solid enough debut, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings against the Cardinals. Glasnow posted a 1.78 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with a 117:52 K:BB ratio in 17 starts and 96 innings in the minors. The walks are a concern; management of which will be a key factor in his success. At 101.1 innings, he is close to matching the 109.1 he threw last year, so he maybe limited as the season wears on. Glasnow has refined his changeup, giving him another option along with his top-shelf fastball and curveball. The combination of those pitches makes him a possible future ace or No. 2 starter, despite getting sent down Friday. The belief is that he will remain on turn in the minors and be back shortly after the All-Star break. 12-team Mixed: $7; 15-team Mixed: $17; 12-team NL - $24 (up if think he gets recalled soon and sticks in the majors)

Junior Guerra, Brewers – Guerra allowed five runs in 5.1 innings June 16, raising his ERA to 3.81 on the year and starting the whispers if the bloom is off the rose. Since then, he has allowed just two runs in 22.1 innings, including none his last two starts, to restore the bouquet of flowers to their previous state. Jump on board if you haven't already, as the 31-year-old rookie continues to excel. 12-team Mixed: owned; 15-team Mixed: $18; 12-team NL - owned

Jeremy Hellickson, Phillies – Hellickson is in the midst of a hot streak and is receiving strong interest on the trade market. He has tossed four consecutive quality starts and now is 6-6 with a 3.92 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 93 strikeouts in 105.2 innings this season. Hellickson will be a free agent after the year, so look for the Phillies top move him. Especially since Jake Thompson has been pitching well at Triple-A and is the likely choice to take Hellickson's rotation spot if he is moved. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL - $11.

Jake Peavy, Giants – Peavy recorded four quality starts in his five outings before Saturday and had been excellent in his last eight starts after a rough beginning to the year. In those last eight outings, Peavy was 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA and a 33:11 K:BB over 47.2 innings, lowering his overall era to 5.04, showing just how bad that start to the year was. Unfortunately, that streak ended Saturday, as Peavy allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with three stikeouts in just 4.2 innings Saturday. Peavy is not the pitcher he was in his heyday, but he should remain solid, especially at AT&T Park in San Francisco. 12-team Mixed: $6; 15-team Mixed: $12; 12-team NL - owned

Logan Verrett, Mets – Verrett is once again stepping in for an injured Mets starter. Earlier in the season, it was for Jacob deGrom, then for Steven Matz and now it's for Matt Harvey, who is out for the season after undergoing surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Verrett was spectacular against the Rockies last year when he pitched for Harvey. This year, he has struggled mightily when starting, as control issues have plagued him in his five starts, issuing 14 free passes in 23.2 innings. Verrett didn't fare much better Saturday, allowing five runs on four hits and five walks in 6.2 innings. His leash will be short, as N.Y. has Gabriel Ynoa and Sean Gilmartin as possible options and will explore the trade market to find a replacement starter for Harvey. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $2; 12-team NL - $5

Injury activation/updates:

Brett Anderson, Dodgers – Anderson, out since spring training after undergoing surgery to repair a bulging disk in his back, could be ready to return to the Dodgers sometime in mid-August. He threw bullpen sessions Tuesday and Friday, the first time he has done so since the surgery and will steadily work his back, barring any setbacks. Anderson might be back in mid-August if he continues to progress as expected, though it may not be as a starter with Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu back, Bud Norris also in L.A. and Alex Wood also working his back. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $0; 12-team NL: $2 (early spec bid)

Homer Bailey, Reds – Bailey, after a setback in May and getting eased back into action in June, made his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Louisville on Saturday, throwing 38 pitches in two innings, allowing a run on five hits while striking out one. His velocity was up to 95 mph, and he has not had any physical setbacks after the start. Bailey made his second start Thursday, allowing two earned runs in 3.2 innings. Baily likely will need the full 30-day rehab period, making five starts, before he rejoins the Reds. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (go higher if a believer)

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers – Ryu made five rehab starts in the last couple weeks between Triple-A Oklahoma City and High-A Rancho Cucamonga before getting activated Thursday. His first start in the majors in 14 months following surgery last May to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder didn't go particularly well. Ryu gave up six earned runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings against the Padres. For those who still believe he can rebound, Ryu was 28-15 with a 3.17 ERA and a 7.7 K/9 for his career prior to that start, but I can see going the other direction based on the injury and lengthy recovery. 12-team Mixed: $4; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14 (same bid as prior).

Alex Wood, Dodgers – Wood, sidelined since May 31 with left elbow soreness, started throwing off a mound this week. That was about two weeks behind schedule, but he remains on pace to possibly return in early August. Wood, who owns a 3.99 ERA and 62:19 K:BB ratio in 10 starts this season, may have to battle for a starting spot when he does return with Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu back and Bud Norris also in L.A. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (early spec bid).

Relief Pitching

Joe Blanton, Dodgers – Blanton, who mainly was a starter until 2103. Resurrected his career last season with the Royals. He signed with L.A. this past offseason and has posted a 2.14 ERA and 0.76 WHIP with a 47:13 K:BB in 46.1 innings. Blanton now appears to be Kenley Jansen's top setup man, notching 13 holds in his 42 games. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL - $4.

Tyler Clippard/Daniel Hudson, Diamondbacks – Cippard and Hudson, the primary setup men for Brad Ziegler, will each get a chance to close with Ziegler dealt to Boston late Friday night. Clippard, who has posted a 3.06 ERA with 39 strikeouts over 32.1 innings, may get the first chance due to his prior closing experience. However, he has only converted 54 saves in 94 opportunities in his career, but he had 32 for the Nationals in 2012, and the Diamondbacks could choose to use Hudson as the closer if Clippard can't finish games. Hudson got off to a brilliant start, but he in the midst of a major rough patch, allowing 11 of the 16 runs he has surrendered on the year in his last five appearances. Carl Edwards, Cubs – Edwards, promoted June 20 to take Dexter Fowler's roster spot, has made six appearances, allowing two runs on two runs with a 10:1 K:BB ratio in 7.2 innings. At Triple-A Iowa this year, Edwards posted a 4.26 ERA and 35 strikeouts against 17 walks in 25.1 innings. If Edwards continues to pitch well, he could see high-leverage situations and start to rack up holds. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $0; 12-team NL - $2.

Injury activation/updates:

Adam Ottavino, Rockies – Ottavino, who had Tommy John surgery last May, rejoined the Rockies this week. He showed he was ready by pitching on back-to-back days this past weekend. In 10 April appearances last season before he was sidelined, Ottavino pitched 10.1 scoreless innings to produce three saves, a 0.48 WHIP and a 13:2 K:BB. For now, manager Walt Weiss seems content with Carlos Estevez in the ninth and Jake McGee as the primary setup option, limiting Ottavino to working in the middle innings. But McGee is a free agent after the season and even though Estevez has filled in nicely with McGee out, Ottavino could be next in line to get saves in Colorado. 12-team Mixed: $0; 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $4

Sergio Romo, Giants – Romo, out since April 10 with a strained elbow flexor tendon in his pitching arm, posted a 19:1 K:BB over 11.1 innings between High-A San Jose and Triple-A Sacramento during his rehab appearances. He was activated Monday and will initially be used in a low-leverage situation before moving back to his role in the eighth inning as one of Santiago Casilla's setup men. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $0; 12-team NL - $2

Catcher

Eric Fryer/Erik Kratz, Pirates – Fryer hit 368/.415/.421 in 41 plate appearances for St. Louis earlier this season, but was sent back to Triple-A in late June when Brayan Pena was activated to serve as Yadier Molina's backup. With Chris Stewart joining Francisco Cervelli on the sidelined, the Pirates claimed Fryer off waivers from the Cardinals. Fryer, who debuted with the Pirates in 2011 after coming over in the deal that sent Eric Hinske to the Yankees in 2009, will handle the duties behind the plate with Kratz until Cervelli returns after the All-Star break. Mike McKenry, Cardinals – McKenry was called up to serve as the Cardinals' backup catcher behind Yadier Molina with Brayan Pena landing on the DL. McKenry had a big 2014 season in Colorado but reverted to normal last season and has been in the minors all of this year until the promotion. McKenry hit .301 with 29 RBI in 37 games for Triple-A Memphis. He will see the occasional start in St. Louis. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 15-team NL: $2.

Cameron Rupp, Phillies – Rupp has been on fire lately, collecting hits in 10 consecutive games before the streak was broken in Wednesday's contest, slashing .349/.404/.721 during that time. The hot streak, despite an 0-for-10 since, increased his season numbers to .275/.318/.485 with eight home runs and 22 RBI this season. Rupp has carved out additional playing time and has become the clear No. 1 catcher over Carlos Ruiz, though Jorge Alfaro looms in the minors. 12-team Mixed: $7; 15-team Mixed: $14, 15-team NL: $25 (likely owned)

Tomas Telis, Marlins – Telis, who was hitting .311/.363/.413 with three home runs and 27 RBI for Triple-A New Orleans, was promoted Friday. He will be the third catcher behind J.T. Realmuto and Jeff Mathis while he is with the Marlins, which might only last for a few days. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 15-team NL: $0

Injury activation/updates:

Francisco Cervelli, Pirates – Cervelli broke the hamate bone in his left hand June 11, requiring surgery to repair the injury. Following the operation, he wasn't expected to return to "full baseball activities" for 4-6 weeks. Cervelli caught 61 pitches from Ryan Vogelsong and took a batting practice session Tuesday, approximately a month from the surgery. He is on pace to return shortly after the All-Star break. Eric Fryer and Erik Kratz will hold down the fort behind the plate with Chris Stewart out until Cervelli, who batted a disappointing .257/.373/.293 with no home runs and 21 RBI, is ready to return. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7, 15-team NL: $11 (early spec return bid).

First Base

Josh Bell, Pirates – Bell was profiled two weeks when he got hot at the plate. After hitting just four home runs his first 28 games, Bell has nine longballs his last 55 games with 53 RBI while posting a .324/.407/.535 line, though his walk rate has declined (12 percent down from 14 percent) and strikeout rate (16 percent up from 10 percent) spiked a bit. This weekend, he served as a bench bat, singling Friday and blasting a pinch-hit home run Saturday. John Jaso has done a solid job at first for the Pirates but Bell could force his way into playing time against southpaws and possibly even more. 12-team Mixed: $4; 15-team Mixed: $11, 15-team NL: $22

David Freese, Pirates – Freese continues to excel, posting a .298/.375/.478 with 10 homers and 38 RBI in 278 plate appearances through Thursday. If Jung-Ho Kang's legal woes sidelined him, Freese could also be in line for additional playing time. Freese qualifies at first and third and has given the Pirates more than they likely expected when they signed him in spring training. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7, 15-team NL: owned.

Chris Johnson/Don Kelly, Marlins – Johnson and Kelly will man first base with Justin Bour landing on the DL with an ankle injury. Johnson may see most of the action against lefties, against whom he hit .395 and .325 the last two years, and Kelly versus righties. However, given how poorly Kelly has hit in the majors and in the minors, Johnson should end up on the plus side of the platoon. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $0, 15-team NL: $4; Kelly - 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 15-team NL: $0.

Mark Reynolds, Rockies – Reynolds in on a roll, as 12 times in his last 17 games he has hit safely, notching five homers and 14 RBI over that span. The one-year, $2.6 million deal he signed with Colorado last December has worked out well for both sides, with Reynolds providing a solid bat and leadership off the field. 12-team Mixed: $14; 15-team Mixed: $22, 15-team NL: owned

Clint Robinson, Nationals – Robinson is making the most of the additional playing time afforded him with Ryan Zimmerman landing on the disabled list. He blasted home runs Thursday and Friday and added another RBI on Saturday. Manager Dusty Baker could elect to slide Daniel Murphy to first to get Trea Turner into the lineup at second base, but for now, it looks like Robinson, who had 10 HR and 34 RBI in 309 AB last year, will see most of the playing time at first base. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $7, 15-team NL: $11

Andy Wilkins, Brewers – The Brewers promoted Wilkins to provide the team a backup first baseman and outfielder. He will see the occasional start but likely be deployed most often as a pinch-hitter. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 15-team NL: $2.

Second Base

Greg Garcia/Jedd Gyorko/Kolten Wong, Cardinals – Wong, profiled a few weeks ago when he was promoted back to the majors, gets another mention, as his role should increase with Matt Carpenter landing on the DL with a Grade-2 strained oblique. He likely will play against righties in place of Carpenter with Garcia and Gyorko also seeing playing time as well. Wong opened the season as the Cardinals' second baseman but his struggles at the plate landed him in the minors June 6. He had posted a .222 BA and .592 OBA to earn that demotion to Triple-A Louisville. Wong handle the demotion the best way possible, by raking at the plate, as he posted a 1.458 OPS during his seven games in the minors, prompting the Cardinals to bring him back. Garcia will also see some starts at second and has seen the occasional start at third while Jhonny Peralta is sidelined. Gyorko has played all over the infield, which could continue, especially with Carpenter out. He has played six games at first and none at third, which may give him eligibility in certain formats. Munenori Kawasaki, Cubs – Kawasaki was promoted Saturday to provide versatility and a left-handed bat to the Chicago bench. Don't expect him to see much action. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 15-team NL: $2.

Jose Peraza, Reds – Brandon Phillips left Friday's game with a hairline fracture in his left hand that he will attempt to play through. If he is sidelined by the injury, Peraza, who has been seeing time anyway, will slide into the lineup at second base in place of Phillips. Peraza is also seeing time in the outfield and has nine steals in 23 games in the majors, which is where he provides value for his owners. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7, 12-team NL: $11 (for the steals)

Yadiel Rivera, Brewers – Rivera was called up to fill the open slot created with Aaron Hill traded to the Red Sox. His posted a .232/.282/.305 line at Triple-A Colorado Springs, so don't expect much and he is likely just a placeholder under Orlando Arcia is promoted. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 12-team NL: $0

Ryan Schimpf, Padres – Schimpf, a career minor-leaguer, was profiled when he received his first callup June 14. He hit .355/.432/.729 with 15 homers, 17 doubles and 48 RBI at Triple-A El Paso to earn that promotion. At 5-foot-9, he doesn't fit the profile of a power hitter, but he does have four straight full seasons of 20-plus HR. Schimpf has carried over that power to the majors, totaling four homers in 47 at-bats against right-handers, though he is not seeing much time against lefties, receiving just seven at-bats. That should remain the case, but the at-bats against righties should allow him to remain productive. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14.

Injury activation/updates:

Kelby Tomlinson, Giants – Tomlinson, on the disabled list since June 10 with a left thumb sprain, should be back shortly after the All-Star break. He recently began a rehab assignment that should take him through the break. When Tomlinson returns, he should slot back into a utility role, seeing occasional starts (mostly against left-handed pitching) between second base, shortstop, third and left field. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No, 15-team NL: $3.

Shortstop

Orlando Arcia, Brewers – What I wrote about Arcia several months ago remains true now. It's not a matter of if but when Arcia will be up in the majors. He tore through Double-A last season, posting a .307/.343/.453 slash line with eight home runs and 25 steals as a 20-year old. Arcia didn't look out of place in major-league camp this spring and was sent down to get Triple-A seasoning. He hasn't torn the cover off the ball nor has he looked overmatched. With Aaron Hill now dealt, Arcia is a bit closer to the majors. Jean Segura was traded in January and Jonathan Villar, who arrived this offseason from Houston, has ably handled shortstop, but he is just a place gap. There is some thought that Villar could move to third to make room for Arcia at short. Regardless, Arcia should be up later this summer. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7, 12-team NL: $9 (stash candidate, up bid in keeper leagues).

Jose Reyes, Mets – Reyes, profiled frequently the last several weeks, gets another mention, as he was promoted Tuesday by the Mets. He passed through after Colorado decided to designate him for assignment following his completion of a rehab stint at the end of his 52-game suspension for domestic abuse on May 31. The Mets opted to sign him, bringing him back where he was drafted and spent the first eight years of his career. Reyes is playing third base, where he will mostly be deployed in the majors, as Asdrubal Cabrera is locked in at shortstop. In addition, he will see time at second, short and possibly in center field. Reyes has supplanted Curtis Granderon as the team's leadoff hitter, which should enable him to score more runs and provide a spark atop the lineup. 12-team Mixed: $9; 15-team Mixed: $18; 12-team NL: $32.

Trea Turner, Nationals – Turner gets mentioned again this week even with Danny Espinosa's hot streak not subsiding. He was covered last week when he began receiving a chance in center field down at Triple-A Syracuse. Turner this week gets mentioned, as he was promoted Friday, along with Michael Taylor, with Ryan Zimmerman landing on the DL and Lucas Giolito getting sent down. Ben Revere just started getting hot and now with Taylor also in D.C., Turner may not see much action in center. But, manager Dusty Baker may move Daniel Murphy from second to first to replace Zimmerman, opening second base for Turner or he could move Espinosa to second and play Turner at shortstop. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (if the proposed moves above come to fruition)

Third Base

Will Middlebrooks/Hernan Perez, Brewers – Middlebrooks was promoted last Sunday to give Milwaukee some depth in the infield. Despite his spotty major-league record with Boston and San Diego, Middlebrooks earned the callup by hitting .282 with 10 home runs and 47 runs batted in at Triple-A Colorado Springs. Milwaukee provided Middlebrooks a clearer path to playing time by dealing Aaron Hill to Boston on Thursday, so look for Middlebrooks and Perez to split time at the hot corner. Middlebrooks - 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11; Perez - 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4.

Injury activation/updates:

Gordon Beckham, Braves – Beckham, on the disabled list for the second time this year with a strained hamstring, was activated and started at short Thursday. Now that he is back, Beckham, who had a .284/.382/.442 line in 31 games, likely will start at third base against lefties in place of Adonis Garcia and see action at shortstop. To make room on the roster, Emilio Bonifacio was DFA'd. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7.

Tommy La Stella, Cubs – La Stella, out for almost a month with a strained hamstring, rejoined the Cubs on Wednesday. Prior to getting injured, he hit .291/.378/.494 with two home runs and seven RBI in 38 games. La Stella is seeing some time at third, in pace of phase out Jeimer Candelario when Kris Bryant is in the outfield, and second base. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $2

Outfield

Aaron Altherr, Phillies – Altherr, sidelined since March after undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, began a rehab assignment with the Phillies' Gulf Coast League squad on Friday. Following the surgery, Altherr was expected to miss 4-6 months. He is at the four-month mark and likely will need 20-30 days of rehab games before he rejoins the Phillies. Altherr moved from Double-A to the majors last year, impressing the Phillies in the two months he was up in the bigs and projects to potentially be a 20-20 candidate in the future. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (early spec return bid).

Michael Conforto, Mets – Conforto, in the midst of a major slump, was sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas to find his stroke. So far, so good, as Conforto went 3-for-5 and fell a triple shy of the cycle with three runs batted in for Las Vegas on Saturday to up his average to .340 in 50 at-bats. Conforto may need just another week or two in the minors before he is called back up to the majors. When he is promoted, look for Conforto to start in left field against righties and possibly some lefties as well. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14 (early spec call up bid)

Randal Grichuk, Cardinals – Grichuk, who landed in the minors due to his struggles at the plate, went 15-for-53 with five home runs and 15 RBI to get called back up from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. Part of the reason for that promotion was due to Brandon Moss (ankle) landing on the DL. However, in the meantime, Matt Carpenter is expected to miss at least a few weeks with a Grade-2 strained oblique and Kolten Wong has moved from center field back to second base, opening playing time for Grichuk if he plays fairly well. Grichuk will split time with Tommy Pham but the opportunity exists for him to run with the job. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14

Michael Taylor, Nationals – Taylor, optioned down on Independence Day, last just one game at Triple-A Syracuse along with Trea Turner with Ryan Zimmerman landing on the DL and Lucas Giolito getting sent down. The Nats were playing short-handed on the bench, so Taylor gives them another bat. Taylor landed in the minors because he was hitting just .225/.266/.372 and needed to reduce his 31.1 percent strikeout rate and improve his 66 percent contact rate. Ben Revere has shown signs of life, so he should see most of the time in CF, leaving Taylor to spot starts and pinch-hitting duty. 12-team Mixed: $0; 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $4.

Andrew Toles, Dodgers – Toles rose through three levels this year, batting .330/.375/.507 with six homers and 23 stolen bases in 73 games, to earn a promotion Friday. He started that night and Saturday, pushing Trayce Thompson to the bench. Toles missed all of 2015 after getting released by the Rays for an unspecified issue but has resurrected his career this season with the Dodgers. Andre Ethier, Dodgers – Ethier suffered a right tibia fracture March 18 when he fouled the ball off his shin and was projected to be out 10-14 weeks. Manager Dave Roberts announced this week that Ethier could be back Aug. 2, which would mean he would be out about 18-19 weeks total.
