MLB Picks Today: Expert MLB Picks for
Saturday, September 5

It's the first Saturday in September, as we're heading down the stretch in the 2026 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, with many teams with roughly 20-22 games remaining in the regular season.

On Saturday, there are the regular 15 games on the slate, with just two afternoon games with a 4:10 p.m. ET first pitch in each. All of the other games are evening starts, as MLB cedes the TV schedule to college football, which begins its first full weekend of their season.

Even with college football, FOX still has its national-regional game, with the Arizona Diamondbacks-Houston Astros and New York Yankees-San Diego Padres meeting at 7:15 p.m. ET.

As far as last Saturday, we were unable to record a 10th consecutive column without a losing record. The streak finally ended last Saturday. Let's get back on track!

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians: Expert Betting Tips and Analysis

The Tigers (64-77) and Guardians (72-70) meet at Progressive Field for the third contest in a four-game series on Saturday.

Cleveland swept a pair of games Saturday with a pair of one-run games, splitting the Over-Under. The Guardians are now 2.5 games back of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central Division with 20 games remaining in the regular season, and the ChiSox have a game in hand.

The Guardians are 22-19 inside the division, while the Tigers are a dismal 14-29 vs. AL Central teams. Meanwhile, Cleveland is just 35-38 at Progressive Field this season, but Detroit is 30-42 on the road.

Oddly enough, even though Detroit is 13 games under .500, it has a plus-45 run differential, best in the division. Cleveland is 2 games over .500, but it is minus-9 RD. Still, the Guardians sit in the final wild-card spot in the AL, a game clear of the Toronto Blue Jays, two games better than the Texas Rangers, and three games north of the Baltimore Orioles in a logjam for that final postseason spot.

Detroit turns to LHP Framber Valdez (8-10, 4.36 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) to snap its skid, while Cleveland counters with All-Star LHP Parker Messick (11-8, 2.46 ERA, 1.02 WHIP). The Tigers are 17-28 vs. LHP this season, while Cleveland is 27-20 vs. LHP.

Cleveland is a strong play at home behind Messick as moderate favorites. In addition, the OVer is 5-2 in the past seven games for the Guardians, but the Under is 3-1 in the past four starts by Messick, while the Under has cashed in the past two starts by Valdez. The Tigers have produced just two total runs of support in those outings.

  • Under 7.5 Runs (-124 at FanDuel Sportsbook)

Arizona Diamondbacks at Houston Astros: Saturday Night Baseball Insights

The Diamondbacks (74-68) and the Astros (73-69) meet in an interleague game with playoff implications for both sides.

Houston dealt Arizona a tough blow with a 3-1 win as home favorites (-131) as the Under (9) cashed. The Astros have won four in a row in this series, and nine of the past 10 meetings, while the Under is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings.

Arizona is a half-game back of the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card spot in the NL. It's 33-37 on the road, while going 17-20 in interleague play.

Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (7-2, 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) makes his 16th start and 26th appearance, while the Astros counter with rookie RHP Ethan Pecko (1-0, 6.23 ERA, 1.54 WHIP) for his fourth MLB start. The reuslts have been mixed for him so far. Meanwhile, Pfaadt is 2-1 with a 2.15 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 46 IP in his past seven starts.

The Diamondbacks have dropped four of the past five games, while the Under is 3-1 in the past four outings, and 8-4 in the past 12 contests since Aug. 23.

For the Astros, the Under has cashed in four straight outings, while going 6-1-2 in the past nine, and 11-5-2 in the past 18 contests.

We'll back Pfaadt and the Diamondbacks to get back on track after the loss, while we'll go low on the total yet again. It's a riskier play, though, with Pecko, although the trends point to the game going low.

MLB Best Bets for Diamondbacks at Astros:

  • Diamondbacks ML (-105 at Caesars Sportsbook)
  • Under 8.5 Runs (-110 at Bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, Fanatics and FanDuel Sportsbooks)
