"What? Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!... It ain't over now, 'cause when the goin' gets tough, the tough get goin'. Who's with me? Let's go! Come on!

By with me, I mean entering the NFBC - Postseason Holdem Contest. It's unique, and one of the most challenging fantasy sports competitions. It's not cheap at $150 per entry, but someone will win $20,000. Why not you (or even me)?

The complete rules and scoring can be found on the NFBC site. Here is a synopsis.

LINEUP

One each at catcher, first base, second base, third base and shortstop, with four outfielders, a utility and six pitchers.

Each team still alive in the playoffs must be represented. There is a min and max per round:

Round 1: Division Series
Maximum of THREE players from each remaining team
Minimum of ONE player from each team

Round 2: League Championship Series
Maximum of SIX players from each remaining team
Minimum of TWO players from each team

Round 3: World Series
Maximum of TEN players from one team
Minimum of SIX players from each team

Multiplier

This is the key to winning the overall competition. Players accumulate more points the longer they remain on your roster. They have to be on your roster for consecutive scoring periods.

Two consecutive scoring periods: Two times the points for the second period
Three consecutive scoring periods: Two times the points for the second period, three times the points for the third period
Players active in the first and third period, but not the second, lose the multiplier in the World Series

Takeaways

To win the contest, you're probably going to need to have as many of the two World Series participants on your roster as possible each period to maximize the multiplier effect.
If you are backing a team to win, then there must be a corresponding losing team. You're going to have to replace those players as the competition progresses. When filling position, focus more on the players from the teams you see advancing. Don't force a better player from a team you feel will lose if it blocks a player from the winning team(s). The points derived from the multipliers make up the difference from using a lesser player on a team you project to lose.
Don't get hung up on contrarian approaches. With the three rounds, and multipliers, the chance of two entrants with the same lineup is slim. Choose the players on each team you feel will score the most, in accordance with filling in the proper position

Rankings

Rankings are always important, but in this contest, choosing the winning teams and cleverly selecting the multipliers are more relevant than rankings. That said, what follows are a set of overall rankings and by position. The per game points scored over the course of the season are normalized for a week's worth of play. The average points per game are clearly different for position players, starting pitchers and relievers. The adjusted points make it possible to compare the expectations of a hitter to a starter and/or closer.
