Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels Best Bets

The first two games of the current series in some ways serve as a microcosm of the Mariners' disappointing 70-82 season to date. Seattle fell to the lowly Angels by 6-4 and 2-1 scores, leaving a combined 12 men on base while going 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and striking out 11 times.

Nevertheless, the M's have proven an unpredictable bunch, with the big names in their lineup always holding the potential to rise to the occasion on any given night. Wednesday presents an intriguing matchup in the form of a former teammate to some of Seattle's big bats, Yusei Kikuchi. The veteran left-hander has put together a wholly unremarkable season that includes a 4.75 ERA and 1.49 WHIP, but a solid 9.2 K/9 as well across his 11 starts.

Hitters are squaring up fairly well against the southpaw when they do make contact, however, as he's conceded an 8.9 percent barrel rate and 44.6 percent hard-hit rate, along with a 5.00 xERA. There is some optimism to be gleaned from the fact Kikuchi has pitched well at home, albeit over a modest sample of 18 innings, fashioning a 3.00 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 11.0 K/9 while pitching to a .299 wOBA.

The matchup against the Mariners is challenging on paper, as Seattle comes in with a .346 wOBA and .787 OPS against left-handed pitching on the road over the last month. Current Seattle hitters own a collective .755 OPS against Kikuchi in 103 career encounters as well, a feast-or-famine sample where they've struck out 25 times but also belted nine of their 24 hits for extra bases.

On the visitors' side of the pitching equation, George Kirby takes the hill for the Mariners in what will be the 29th start of a disappointing season overall. The right-hander is on track for a losing record for the first time in his career, and although his current 9-11 mark is accompanied by a serviceable 4.25 ERA, Kirby also carries a 1.36 WHIP and has given up 186 hits in 165.1 innings. What's more, Kirby has struggled plenty on the road, where he's pitched to a 5.53 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 1.4 HR/9 across 71.2 frames.

Kirby's .313 xwOBA and 4.13 xERA does lend credence to the notion he's pitched a bit better than his overall numbers indicate, but very much like Kikuchi, Kirby's had some trouble with some of the hitters he's slated to face Wednesday. Current Angels bats hold a collective .257 average and .835 OPS against him in 81 career plate appearances, striking 26 times in that sample but also collecting nine extra-base hits among their 19 knocks.

Kirby has also had more than his fair share of issues early in games, allowing a .292 opponent average or higher in each of the first five frames this season, along with 17 total home runs. Los Angels averages a respectable 2.57 runs per first five innings at home and the Mariners check in with a nearly identical 2.55 figure on the road in that split, teeing up the possibility of some offense in the first half of Wednesday's series finale.

Then, when searching for a viable player prop, Randy Arozarena jumps off the screen. The veteran slugger has three career home runs in 31 career encounters with Kikuchi, but more important, he's carrying a .310 average and .402 wOBA overall against left-handers this season, including still impressive .277 and .363 figures in those respective categories on the road.

Arozarena is averaging 2.3 hits + runs + RBI per game this season and has been at his best on the road with a .307 average and .922 OPS in that split. Therefore, a bet on him getting to at least two hits + runs + RBI during a game in which the Mariners are favored and projected for over four runs is certainly in play.
