Miami Marlins at Kansas City Royals Best Bets
The Marlins have exceeded expectations in manager Clayton McCullough's second season, forging a 70-69 record heading into Wednesday's game and remaining firmly in the NL wild-card race. There have been plenty of key contributors in every facet, and Perez has certainly been one on the pitching side despite the fact he carries just a 7-10 record.
Perez has complemented that sub-par mark with a 3.44 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 9.8 K/9, including an 11.3 K/9 on the road. The right-hander's Statcast metrics bear out how effective he's legitimately been, as he's pitched to a .208 xBA, .298 xwOBA and 3.70 xERA. Perez is also averaging a blistering 98.1 mph on his fastball, a 94th percentile mark.
Perez has notably held left-handed hitters — which the Royals are fairly heavy on — to a .178 average and .258 wOBA overall, including .153 and .244 figures in those respective categories on the road. He's also holding the opposition to a .217 average with men on base, and he has ERAs of 4.12 or lower in all but the fourth inning this season when it comes to the first half of games.
On the other side, Cameron enters Wednesday in the midst of a particularly impressive stretch of play. The left-hander has authored a 4-0 record, 1.29 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 0.2 HR/9 across the 48.2 innings covering his last seven starts. He's given up more than two earned runs just once in that span, with that instance a perfectly acceptable four-earned-run outing on the road against the mighty Dodgers.
Cameron has also pitched to a .313 xwOBA and 4.11 xERA, the latter figure just slightly above his conventional 3.98 figure. Although the southpaw has actually pitched better on the road than at home, that's largely the result of a pair of especially tough outings at Kaufmann Stadium, and he's yielded only one earned run across the 13 innings covering his last pair of home starts.
Additionally, the Marlins have been a mostly underperforming bunch against lefties on the road over the last month of play with a .230 average, .293 wOBA and .087 ISO in that split. Miami is also averaging the sixth-fewest runs per first five innings per road game (2.16), which helps offset some of the trouble Cameron has occasionally had early in games.
Given all the factors cited, a same-game parlay that banks on the Marlins being down by no more than one run and no more than five runs being scored in the first five frames is a consideration.
Then, considering Perez has recorded at least 16 outs in 14 of 24 starts — and that all but two of the 10 occasions in which he hasn't were before June 1 — the Over on his 15.5 pitching outs is also in play.
