ANALYSIS
Mateo had 20 saves last year for Hashin with a 1.80 ERA and 9.2 K/9. It seems unlikely he'll return to MLB as he'll be 32 next season. He last pitched in MLB for the Padres in 2015.

2011
With a late-June call-up to San Diego, Mateo officially cemented his status as a Tommy John success story, reaching the majors again after a three-year absence. The results were far better in 2015 than those from his time with the Cubs from 2010-11, as Mateo was able to limit the free passes while also missing bats at a high clip (29.2 percent) en route to a 4.00 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 26 appearances. The long ball haunted him a bit -- Mateo gave up five home runs in 27 frames -- but he finished strong, with just two earned runs (one homer) allowed in his final 11 appearances. Mateo should be able to solidify his spot in the bullpen in spring training and the back-end roles are relatively wide open, but he will face competition from the likes of Jon Edwards, Brandon Maurer, Nick Vincent and Kevin Quackenbush for high-leverage work.
Mateo showed signs of being a serviceable relief option with 25 strikeouts in 23 innings before his season was cut short in early July by a strained right forearm. Mateo walks too many batters, and gives up too many flyballs, but he has the arm to succeed in a middle-relief role should he improve his command. Expect him to compete for a job in spring training.
Mateo saw some work with the Cubs at the end of the year, and while the 26:9 K:BB ratio in 21 IP looks promising, he gave up six homers in that span which explains the unsightly 5.82 ERA. In short, Mateo could win a middle relief job out of camp, but he'll have to cut down on the walks and the long balls before he earns an important role.
