ANALYSIS
Salcedo, 24, came over to the Pirates organization this past winter from the Braves, but has been struggling at Double-A Altoona for much of the season. He posted a .238/.304/.346 slash line with 40 strikeouts and 21 walks over 214 at-bats this season, and will now head over to the Royals organization. The Royals have not announced where Salcedo will be assigned at this point.

Brimming with raw talent, Salcedo is still very much a work in progress. He spent the 2013 season at Double-A Mississippi, posting a rather paltry .304 OBP in 113 games, though his strikeout and walk rates both improved. Salcedo has stolen 20-plus bases in each of his last three seasons and also has home-run power, but he's not where he needs to be yet and likely won't get there anytime soon, as he continues to refine his eye at that plate in an effort to become a more well-rounded player.
Salcedo is one of the biggest tools guys in the Braves' organization. He is all about raw talent, especially in the power department, but a horrible approach at the plate has kept him from developing further. Scouts have questioned both his natural instincts and whether he is committed to playing defense. His minor league numbers have not been good so far, but he has the ability to be a phenom as a hitter. The odds of that happening are looking very low right now, though. Having hit poorly in the lower rungs of the minor leagues, there is likely no chance of Salcedo contributing to a major league squad over the next few seasons. It will be interesting to see if he shows some development in 2013 as the power potential with Salcedo is tantalizing.
Salcedo was seen as one of the top prospects in the Dominican Republic before signing with the Braves in 2010, but he hasn't posted impressive numbers so far in the minor leagues. Salcedo started the season strong, hitting .275/.348/.454 with nine home runs and 12 stolen bases through June 27. But he slumped in the second half and struggled against right-handed pitching (hitting just .172/.204/.252 against righties). He also moved to third base from shortstop. Despite his overall mediocre numbers, he did draw more walks and improved his contact rate. Scouts still love his tools and he was just 19 years old when last season started, so there's still time for his career to match his early prospect buzz.
Salcedo was seen as one of the top prospects in the Dominican Republic before signing with the Braves last winter. He hit just .197/.239/.295 at Low-A Rome in his first season in the minors. He's seen as having great tools, but struggled with his plate discipline. It's too early to put much stock in his numbers since he was just 18 years old last season. Still, he'll need to turn some of his tools into production soon to keep his top prospect buzz.
