The Athletics reassigned Lombardozzi to their minor-league camp Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Lombardozzi had little chance of winning a utility role with the Athletics with the organization earmarking Chad Pinder for those duties in 2018. Unless he asks for a release from the Athletics, Lombardozzi is expected to open the season with Triple-A Sacramento.

Lombardozzi is Italian for “empty bat.” True story. Throughout his minor league career, Lombardozzi has been able to hit for average, and he even ran a bit at the lower levels. Now that he has been on the Triple-A-to-MLB shuttle the past few seasons, regular playing time has been tough to come by and his production when on the field has been boring. You need just two hands to count up his homers and steals over the past three seasons and there is nothing that points toward any kind of hidden breakout. He does not strike out much and does not hit for any power so his production is completely at the mercy of the BABIP gods. There is no reason to roster him in anything but the deepest AL-only leagues.
Lombardozzi is a decent enough utility player, but there's little to recommend him from a fantasy perspective as even the speed he showed in the minors has evaporated (he's just 9-for-15 in stolen base attempts over two seasons with the Nationals.) Dealt to the Tigers, a team with fairly established regulars at all his usual positions, Lombardozzi could struggle to get the same amount of playing time off the bench that he saw with the Nats.
In a lineup loaded with prodigious talents like Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman it is somehow reassuring to note that the Nationals still got full mileage out of an old school, scrappy overachiever like Lombardozzi, who saw his at-bats all over the diamond due to various injuries. His minor league profile suggests he will run more once he gets comfortable in the majors, which could boost his fantasy value. However, he may not get as many opportunities at playing time if the Nationals have fewer injuries this season. With Anthony Rendon charging up the depth chart behind him, Lombardozzi's window to establish himself as a major league regular could be a very small one.
The Nationals are still figuring out what to do with Lombardozzi after he put together a .309/.360/.430 line with 30 stolen bases in both Double-A and Triple-A in 2011. He shouldn’t hit more than a handful of home runs in the majors, as he has not hit more than eight in any professional season, but his ability to make contact (13.2 percent career strikeout rate) and get on base (.369 career OBP) should make for an intriguing option down the road. Lombardozzi could make a case to be on the 25-man roster, but expect him to start 2012 with Syracuse.
