Toiling away anonymously in the Yankees minor league system, Laird finally caught a break after being designated for assignment and getting picked up by the hapless Astros. He started 12 games for Houston down the stretch and found his way into five more as a pinch hitter and defensive replacement. The results were pedestrian, but an improvement over his 2011 campaign is probably enough to get a long look during spring training. Laird took twice as many walks for Triple-A Scranton than he did in 2011, but he still strikes out too much for someone with just average power. At age 25, Laird still has fewer than 100 major league at-bats. While he's never exactly been on a prospect radar, he will have plenty of chances to showcase himself on an Astros squad with lots of opportunities for younger players.
Laird drove in 102 runs across two levels in 2010, but there's a lot of swing-and-miss in his game, and it caught up with him at Triple-A in 2011, as he hit just .260 with a .288 OBP.  Laird is going to need to improve his plate discipline if he's going to secure his major league future.  He may see some major league time in 2012 as a backup if he gets off to a hot start at Triple-A, but don't expect too much unless he demonstrates marked improvement in his batting eye.
Laird claimed Eastern League MVP honors at Double-A Trenton last season by hitting .291 and smacking 23 homers in 107 games. Since both corner outfield spots are occupied in New York for the foreseeable future, the organization will try Laird in the outfield to see if he's a potential fit there, although a trade would probably be Laird's best path to major league playing time.
