In his stints with the Rangers and Yankees in 2008, Ponson ate up innings and that's about it. He's much too hittable to be considered a reliable option every fifth day over the course of a full season. At this stage of his career, Ponson is an emergency stopgap, but he won't be considered anything more than an option for the back of the rotation -- if he's able to lock down a roster spot somewhere during spring training. Fantasy owners can't even squeeze strikeouts out of him -- he had just 58 K in 140 innings -- so there's nothing to be excited about here.

Ponson's big-league career is fading away faster than his plate at the dinner table. It was only a few short years ago when he was touted as a marquee option available on the mid-season trade market, but now he's got a long road ahead if he hopes to be on an MLB roster again, as he needs to re-gain his command on the mound and take a much more pro-active approach to monitor his own weight. He'll try to win a spot in Minnesota's rotation this spring, but may need to prove himself again in the minors.

While his weight and conditioning habits were criticized by management and in the media, the pressure of being the No. 1 starter is most likely what got to Ponson in 2004. As a result of trying to be too perfect he left too many balls over the plate, finishing with 265 hits allowed, worst in the majors, and a .305 BAA. With less pressure if the O's sign a free agent No. 1 starter and a chip on his shoulder, he could be worth a lot more than his 2004 would indicate.

Ponson returns to Baltimore after being traded to San Francisco late last season and will anchor the Orioles rotation. His numbers have never been dominant, but an improving K:BB and HR per inning rate are encouraging for 2004.

Ponson will most likely be the number two starter with the Orioles in 2003. His five seasons as a full-time starter have been mediocre on the whole, but he's shown stretches of brilliance. He's managed to cut down on the walks and that's helped, but until the Orioles get an offense, Ponson will be on the losing end of a lot of 4-3 games. In 2002, both his ERA and run support were 4.09.
