The Astros have released Dopriak, reports Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Dopriak had six home runs and a .252 batting average in Triple-A, but doesn't walk much. Look for him to catch on with a different organization as minor league depth.

Dopirak, and not David Cooper, may be the one to fill the vacancy at first base when Lyle Overbay departs as expected following the 2010 season. A career that seemingly had stalled from 2005-2007 appears to have some life left in it after a .317/.371/.549 season between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas. He'll turn 26 and is too old to be considered a prospect, but could give the Jays a stopgap option in 2011 if David Cooper still needs some ironing out. He'll start the season at Triple-A in all likelihood as long as Lyle Overbay is still a Blue Jay.
After a very promising 2004 campaign at low-A Lansing, Dopirak has had two straight disappointing seasons, all but falling off the radar as a serious prospect. He missed much of 2006 with a broken right foot, but returned to hit just .257/.322/.341 in 179 Double-A at-bats. At 6-4, 230 lbs., Dopirak can generate a lot of power, but his plate discipline and contact skills need to improve significantly for him to succeed at higher levels.
After tearing up Low-A at age 20 in 2004 and hitting seven home runs in the Arizona Fall League, Dopirak regressed at High-A Daytona last year. Poor plate discipline is probably a major factor here, and at this point, it's not clear whether he'll start 2006 at Double-A or have to repeat at Daytona.
Dopirak led the low Single-A Midwest League in HR and RBI in 2004 and finished second in slugging with a .593 mark. He followed that up with 7 HR (tied for second) and a .275 average in the Arizona Fall League, but struck out 23 times against just 5 BB. The bottom line is that Dopirak, at 21, has some big-time power upside, but he'll need to improve his plate discipline just a little bit if he expects to succeed at higher levels.
Dopriak was the 56th overall pick in 2002 out of high school. He has excellent power potential – second only to Ryan Harvey in the organization – but must prove he can be more than a free swinger. Scouts comment he has an exceptionally short stroke for a player of his size, so there is room for optimism. If he can maintain a decent strikeout-to –walk ratio in low Single-A in 2004, he could emerge as a genuine home run prospect.
