ANALYSIS
Reynolds was selected second overall in the 2006 draft by the Rockies, but was never able to achieve consistency in the big leagues. In his most recent stint with the Reds, Reynolds started five games and posted a 5.52 ERA, giving up 37 hits over 29.1 innings. After electing free agency in November, the 28-year-old will now look to test the waters overseas.

After a line drive off the elbow delayed the start of his season, Reynolds spent the majority of 2010 at Double-A Tulsa, where he posted underwhelming results. He had good control of his pitches (1.5 BB/9IP), but he simply wasn't able to strike out enough batters (4.5 K/9IP). Injuries are nothing new for Reynolds as he missed nearly all of the 2009 season with back issues. It's disappointing because he was the second overall pick in 2006, ahead of players like Tim Lincecum and Evan Longoria. Should he have a healthy 2011, he'll still need to prove himself at the Triple-A level before the Rockies think about bringing him back up. Those in keeper leagues should look elsewhere when thinking about young pitchers with potential to help their teams.
Reynolds worked only 4.1 innings at Triple-A last season as his career continues to be interrupted with trips to the disabled list and time for recovery. Reynolds has a sinking fastball that he can bring at 90-94 with ease, and a major league average curveball and changeup as secondary pitches. He doesn't miss many bats, but Reynolds has good command and control as he throws strikes with all of his pitches. Until he's healthy and able to show that he can effectively get hitters out at Triple-A, the Rockies probably aren't going to give him another look.
Reynolds looks like a failed first-round draft pick at this point, as he has 123 career strikeouts in 224 professional innings, and was hammered in the majors. He's also had shoulder problems in each of the last two seasons. Until he has some success somewhere, he can be ignored.
Reynolds was having a terrific season at Double-A Tulsa before suffering from right shoulder inflammation. The 2006 second overall pick underwent exploratory arthroscopic surgery in August. If he's fully recovered he'll likely start 2008 at Double-A again. He has strong command and decent strikeout numbers, so if he's able to get his feet under him, he could be in store for a late season callup.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 amateur draft, Reynolds enters 2007 with a lot of pressure on his shoulders, particularly with guys like Andrew Miller and Evan Longoria having been selected after him. Reynolds has the size, command, and stuff of the prototypical front-end starter. While a 3.33 ERA in the hitter-friendly high-A California League is a solid debut, the low strikeout total is somewhat troublesome. He'll look to miss more bats in 2007 as he advances to Double-A. Look for a mid-2008 debut.
