The sun appears to be setting on Moore's big league catching career. Moore has been bouncing between Triple-A and the major leagues since 2009, though he has not played double-digit MLB games since 2010, when he made 218 appearances at the plate in 60 games. In 2016, the 32-year-old played in nine games, amassing five plate appearances, while striking out three times and failing to reach base. He didn't exactly light up Triple-A either, slashing .247/.316/.365 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 86 games, while also only throwing out 29 percent of potential basestealers, though that's actually nine points higher than his career average. He re-signed with the Indians on a minor league contract, although his major league opportunities will likely be limited once again with Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez occupying spots on the 25-man roster.

Moore's been toiling around in the minors for the better part of nine seasons after getting drafted by the Mariners back in 2006. His minor league stat line (.291/.356/.465) is inflated by a long stretch in the Pacific Coast League from his days in the Seattle and Kansas City organizations and he hit just .282/.328/.397 at Triple-A Columbus in his first year as a member of the Cleveland org. He hasn't hit (.201/.241/.309) in parts of seven seasons in the big leagues and he opted for free agency after the Indians outrighted him off the 40-man roster. He'll look to secure a minor league deal with an invite to spring training this offseason.

If Moore thought he was at a crossroads entering last season, he's at an even bigger crossroads this season. Moore's 2011 ended in April thanks to a significant tear of a meniscus. He's expected to be ready for spring training, but he'll have to win a job after the Mariners acquired John Jaso. Miguel Olivo and Jaso could platoon at catcher or at least share the job, leaving Moore at Triple-A Tacoma. Moore might still be the "catcher of the future," but that future is not as near as it seemed not so long ago.

Just 228 at-bats into his career, Moore already appears at a crossroads. The organization was highly critical of his development last year, both behind the plate (seven passed balls in 59 games) and in the batter's box (.513 OPS) and signed Miguel Olivo in the offseason to be the starting catcher. What's more, Olivo signed a two-year deal (for $7 million), theoretically dooming Moore to the backup role and limited at-bats not just this year but next year, as well. But Moore needs consistent at-bats to develop, and the Mariners don't figure to toss aside their one-time "catcher of the future" so easily. If Olivo is merely motivation for Moore, well, there are cheaper ways to motivate.

Seattle's catcher of the future, Moore impressed behind the plate in a late-season callup. His bat is not major league ready yet, but he'll have time to work on that as Rob Johnson's backup. With Jeff Clement shipped to Pittsburgh and Kenji Johjima returning to Japan, Moore's path is clear. He hit .294/.346/.429 with nine home runs last season at Triple-A Tacoma before his promotion, which offers hope that his bat will come around before long.

Moore followed up his strong 2007 campaign at High-A (.914 OPS) with an impressive season at Double-A West Tennessee last season, posting a .902 OPS. Moore hit .319 with 14 homers and 34 doubles and made progress behind the plate as well. His prospects as a future major league starter allow the Mariners to move fellow catcher Jeff Clement out from behind the plate if needed. If all goes well this season at Triple-A, Moore could land in Seattle in 2010 with a shot at starting. Kenji Johjima's three-year contract extension gums up the works, and the Mariners might decide to keep Clement at catcher full time, but Moore has very good upside.

A sixth-round pick in 2006, Moore put on show at High-A High Desert last season, leading all California League catchers in slugging (.543), RBI (102), hits (133) and XBH (52). He also posted 22 homers, 30 doubles, 41 walks and a .307 average. He'll likely start this year at Double-A West Tennessee, which will offer a good test after competing in the hitter-friendly California League. Moore's rapid development likely is one reason the Mariners are willing to part with fellow catcher prospect Jeff Clement, who was the subject of offseason trade rumors. Moore's defense still needs polish, though scouts have praised his mechanics.
