Pettit established himself as a prospect in 2009 by posting an .865 OPS at Triple-A. However, a shoulder injury cost him the entire 2010 season and contributed to a putrid 2011, one in which he hit just .182/.279/.308 between Double-A and Triple-A. Now a year removed from the shoulder injury, Pettit will need to get off to a fast start in 2012 if he hopes to regain prospect status.
Pettit entered last season as one of the Angels' top prospects after hitting .321 with Triple-A Salt Lake in 2009, and he even had an outside shot of securing a roster spot. However, a shoulder injury in spring training ended Pettit's 2010 campaign before it even began. Pettit is almost guaranteed to begin the season with Triple-A Salt Lake after missing all of last year.
Pettit's bounce-back season positions him as a possible low-end starter in the majors, a .280 hitter without much in the way of walks or power, and whose defense isn't great despite having good speed. He needs a change of organization to have a chance, as the Angels have many outfielders better than him.
Pettit spent last season with Double-A Arkansas, where he only hit .248 and hit six home runs. Pettit was the Angels minor league player of the year in 2007 but wasn’t able to make a successful transition to Double-A. The Angels have a lot of outfield prospects above him in the system, so Pettit will need to make big improvements next season if he hopes to keep advancing.
Pettit was named the Angels' minor league player of the year in 2007 after hitting .327 with 18 home runs and 95 RBI in 133 games between Low-A Cedar Rapids and High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Pettit had an impressive .948 OPS and even converted 30 of his 37 stolen base attempts. Pettit projects as an undersized corner outfielder and will have to compensate for his lack of power to be anything more than a bench option down the road. He will likely begin next season at Double-A Arkansas.
