Marte was given his outright release by the Tigers on Wednesday, the Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers didn't have room for Marte in the majors or at Triple-A Toledo, so the team opted to cut him loose. The 27-year-old righty was trying to come back from season-ending shoulder surgery. Assuming his shoulder checks out, Marte will likely catch on with another team's minor league affiliate.

Originally in the mix for a spot in the Detroit bullpen on Opening Day, Marte just missed the cut and started 2013 with Triple-A Toledo. After just three appearances with the Mud Hens, Marte was shut down for the remainder of the season and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He slated to start throwing again in December, which should give him ample time to get ready for spring training. When healthy, Marte can unleash a starter’s repertoire out of the bullpen. He sports a low-to-mid 90s fastball, a plus curveball, a slider and a solid changeup. Assuming he can stay healthy and still post solid results, Marte will once again be a candidate for one of the final spots in the Detroit bullpen.
Marte was a surprise addition to the Tigers' Opening Day roster last season, but his shot with the team was cut short before the regular season began due to a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined for almost two months. Once healthy, Marte impressed out of the bullpen, finishing with a 2.82 ERA and 19:9 K:BB in 13 appearances. As a former starter, the 26-year-old righty has the ability to mix in up to four pitches, but he usually relies most on his fastball and slider now that he's in a relief role. Now healthy, Marte should be in the mix for one of the final bullpen spots on Detroit's 2013 Opening Day roster.
The 25-year-old relief pitcher saw his first cup of coffee with the Tigers in 2011. He went 1-0 with a 2.46 ERA and 1.909 WHIP in four appearances. He hovers in the low-90s with his fastball, but has been known to touch as high as 95 mph at times. Marte's only plus-pitch is his curve, but he also sports a solid slider and decent changeup. If it weren't for durability issues, Marte may profile as a starter, but for now he's projected to work in the middle innings. The right-handed reliever will have a chance to make the Tigers' Opening Day roster in spring training.
Marte caught the eyes of prospect watchers early last season with a strong start at High-A Lakeland. He was eventually promoted to Double-A where he came up lame with a sprained right elbow. The elbow injury probably had a negative effect on his numbers at Double-A and some shoulder soreness in the Arizona Fall League limited his innings there. The Tigers are apparently trying to iron out some mechanical issues to keep Marte healthier this year. We’ll need to see how he does at Double-A when healthy before giving him too much consideration as a prospect.
