Reese Havens

Injuries, as has been the story throughout his career, wreaked havoc with Havens' 2011 campaign. Oblique issues led to surgery to remove an inch of a rib in the 2010 offseason, and he returned to action in May only to be sidelined with a back injury. Havens was limited to just 61 games, posting a .289/.372/.455 line with six home runs and 26 RBI in 211 at-bats at Double-A Binghamton. He could open 2012 at Triple-A Buffalo, and if Havens could find a way to stay healthy, he may become the starting second baseman in New York with a possible .280, 15-homer line at some point.

Havens, the second of the Mets' two first-round picks in 2008, missed the start of the year with a strained oblique. When he returned to action in May, he played just two weeks at High-A St. Lucie before getting promoted to Double-A Binghamton. Unfortunately, he played just 18 games for the B-Mets before being sidelined for the year with another oblique injury. Havens moved to second base last year and showed he can be an offensive threat there, which will need to carry him in his career as he has below-average speed, range and hands. If he can find a way to stay healthy, he could move up the ladder quickly due to his bat.

Havens, the second of the Mets' two first-round picks in 2008, was able to remain healthy and showed signs as to why he was such a high pick. Havens hit .247 with 14 homers and 52 RBI in 360 at-bats with High-A St. Lucie but more impressive was his .361 OBP. He struggled early on in the AFL, but closed with a big last week to hit .324. Havens played shortstop during the year but played second base in the AFL, and that may be his position going forward. He should start the year at Double-A Binghamton.

Havens, who the Mets selected 22nd in 2008 draft out of the University of South Carolina, was limited to DH duty in his first 19 games by an elbow and groin injuries. He was able to play a few games at shortstop after returning to action, but was then shut down for more of the rest of the year due to an elbow ailment. Havens, who is viewed to have plate discipline and power, though it was not evident at Brooklyn, is expected to move to second base or catcher down the road with Jose Reyes entrenched at shortstop.
